What Are You Listening To?

THE MOONS "life on earth" cd,2010.

debut set from this North london band...
i call it "pop",the experts call it "alternative", so i guess "indi-pop" is a good way to describe it...some real nice smooth sounds on this one, nice vocals and harmonies on several tracks also...
lead vocalist Andy Crofts is keyboardist in Paul weller's current studio/live band...pretty sure i picked this one up because f the connection there, along with the fact Weller plays guitar and piano on several tracks...
i wouldnt say it is a Weller sounding album but the songs tend to hark back to the days of the "classic british pop era"...tracks 3 and 4 have an Artic Monkeys feel to them, tracks 8 and 9 on a lyrical level could have been composed by Ray Davies in his heyday...elsewhere some lovely melodies, none moreso than on my favourite track "wondering"...all up a pleasant album with some fine songwriting by a fine young band....
i look foreward to their next one as i believe ex Orange Juice frontman Edwynn Collins has had some input in the studio...

Fear I may have tried to get on board too late with this band. Picked up this ninth studio album when it came and it
did not inspire me to go back. Siouxsie was a strange girl, reminds me of Lene Lovich/Laurie Anderson. A bit too
modern arty for me at times. She was a performance artist as you can see in the clip. Peek-A-Boo was the lead
single, barely passable now for me. Made #1 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart but only a weak #53 overall, and #15 in
the UK. Second single of The Killing Jar also made #2 on the Modern Rock. That chart must be lacking competition.
The album charted at #68 here. Suspect this group was a bit bigger in England than here. All the music press praised
this album but I don't think it's all that. Nothing is great and an even split with the likes and not likes. Music
press be damned............

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Rawhead And Bloodybones

Best Track - Burn Up

A crumpled future in your fist
The killing streak ascends sun kissed
And the firestarter from within
Pokes out from fever blistered grin
King Salamander that's his name
A desert maker that's his aim
The benign cremator, branding iron in his hand
Eager and willing to torch the land

All fire and brimstone
This jack-o-lantern
He likes to watch the buildings burn

His ardour smoulders, phosphorous flies
He radiates with urgence to hypnotise
Stoke the furnace, feed his need
This thirst for fire is all he seeks
He's the blazing rubber making tracks
The blue touch paper at your back

All fire and brimstone
This salamander king
He basks while all around him burns

`Giddy-up, burn-up, not fade away'
These words ignite and pave his way
`Giddy-up, burn-up, stoke it up and turn it up'
He sings these words in fervid frame

All fire and brimstone
This jack-o-lantern
He likes to watch the pyres burn

Jack be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack jump over the candlestick

PAUL WELLER "SONIK KICKS", 2012

Finally bit the bullet and got this piece of musical crap...
Weller goes Kraut Rock..about 30 years too late IMO.the whole thing just sounds dated, forced, flat, uninspired and uninspiring...the lyrics are possibly the worst of his 35 year spanning career, his vocals seem to be flat also, sounds like he is also uninspiredby the sounds he is making...sort of a means to an end maybe???,maybe his contract is up for renewal and he doesnt want to renew it, or maybe doesnt want Island Records to offer him a renewal...i dont know?, this is without a doubt the worst album of his career...worse than that stupid Style Council "cost of loving" album from 1987....
even the tracks that get "**" here barely make the grade IMO and almost all the tracks would not be worthy "b-sides" to singles at any time throughout his career...
stupid thing is though, with some of the live links below the songs sound a bit better without the studio trickery and dumbass synths...but thats the way it was recorded and thats how it is marked here
crap by both Macca and Weller this year, below par albums from Neil and Tim Finn also last year...lets hope and pray that Neil Young's new one due out next month makes the grade!!!!

NINE INCH NAILS "the fragile" double cd,1999.

NiN is basically Trent Reznor, he enlists musicians when and where he needs them...
got this one from Corey...asked him for a good starting point for NiN, he had no idea but made a couple of phonecalls on my behalf and came up with this one for me...wish i hadnt have got it though...
best way i can describe it is...Prodigy meets Marilyn Manson, add a touch of art rock, prog rock, ambience, grunge and there you have it...a piece of crap!
twenty three tracks on this double disc set, disc one actually gets a like rating of 1.7 overall, but with only four 'like' tracks out of eleven on the second disc this one is let down severely...a problem with double albums in general i guess(the exceptions are obviously The Wall and Springsteen's The River)..even The Beatles dipped out in places on their "white album"...
look, this is not my thing, it may well be yours, but i cant reccomend Nine Inch Nails to anyone...sorry!

^ I really enjoyed the Paul Weller and what a great band ! I thought I would never say it but Weller has been releasing more enjoyable material than that of Macca's Crazy !!!! IMHO Sonic Kicks is a keeper! Very good melodic rock!

I want to apologize for being away for so long. A combination of a new found obsession with cinema and depression have seriously taken away from my music time, but, when school lets out in a few days, I intend to be a regular here again.

I mostly spend my now very limited music time listeing to already established favorites as opposed to searching for new stuff, and right now I'm listening to an album I discussed in the Obscure Classics series (expect to see me start that up again once I my cinema obsession cools down a bit), "The Wayward Bus" by the Magnetic Fields. Vitually everyone knows "69 Love Songs", an album that I consider asurdly overrated, but this is just perfect. An 90s "Pet Sounds"
