GEORGE HARRISON "cloud nine" cd,1987.
probably my favourite overall album by George.
guest appearances by Clapton,Ringo,Elton,Jeff Lynne and Gary Wright....co-produced with Lynne also.
originally meant to be title "fab" or "spot the loony"...but he decided on an album track instead.
the Travelling Willbury's spawned from this album, the record company wanted a b-side, Jeff Lynne said to George..."Roy and Tom are in the studio next door, how about we ask them to come in", they did and then it was decided that "lets ask Bob"(he was touring the UK at that time)....and the rest is history...
lots of peace/love type songs here, that one would expect of George, obviously a man content with his life.
the huge hit here was a cover of an old obscure track called "got my mind set on you" which peaked at #1 here and in the US...it failed in the UK only reaching #2, its actually the biggest selling single of his career(yes, and that includes selling more than 'my sweet lord')
also, a bit of a retrospective look back on The Beatles here also in 'when we was fab'(quirky video for this one)
two of the tracks,"someplace else" and "breath away from heaven" were originally written for Madonna's movie 'shanghai surprise', George re-recorded them for this project, and they fit in well with the album.
also around this time Macca released "press to play"...this is lightyears ahead of that one in quality, showing that 'the forgotten beatle' was as good as, if not better at times, than the two principle songwriters of that group.
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

I realise that perhaps some of these albums I listened to this week are not " pure rock ". but here goes !
Finally listened to Jerome's recommendations of Sixto Rodriguez - Cold Fact and Mike Oldfield's Songs of Distant Earth...two very good albums...thanks J !
LEVELLERS - Headlights, White Lines., Black Tar Rivers - Live album ...one of the finest albums of its' genre
KINGS OF LEONE - Live at the O2 - awesome up tempo rock with a great audience !
ALTER BRIDGE - Live at Wembley ....fabulous songs with superb virtuoso guitar playing !
ARSIS - Starve for the Devil - you guessed it....raunchy melodic death metal with clean vocals and MH's cookie monster vocals !

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS "listen to the music:the very best of" cd,1994.
had almost forgot just how many of their songs i love till i pulled this one out and played it...
great,great 1970s Rock & Roll IMO.
this compillation covers most of their hits from the 1970s, stupid thing is though...there are two 'radio edit' versions on this one of 'long train running' and 'listen to the music', dumbass thing is, one is 6seconds longer than the standard version, the other 3seconds shorter...WTF???,really, whats the difference?, so basically i paid for a cd consisting of 19 tracks and two are simply replayed again at the end of the disc...i feel ripped off!!!!
that aside, its interesting to note that when comparing their singles chart success between US/Uk and here in Australia that they only had one top20 hit in the UK (long train running)...stupid Brits!!!!, but had way more top 10 hits here than in their own country.
pretty difficult to pick a favourite track here also,i pick one then think 'what about...', so bloody hard, but i guess i never get tired of 'black water' so 'black water' it is!
watched a few of these clips in their entirity...didnt realise how good these guys were live till then...awesome band, awesome clips IMO!!!!

CRAZY HORSE "crazy horse" cd,1971. #84 US
yeh yeh...youre all going to say "he only loves it 'cause of Neil Young", not true, and not the case...i was critical of some NY albums in the beginners guide and rightly so IMO, i dont simply like an album because its by or associated with an artist i like/love, i take every album on its own merits, same as i dont dislike every album by artists i generally dont like neither!!!...got it?...good!!!
this is CH's debut set from 1971, if you like the sounds they made on NY's "everybody knows this is nowhere" and the more grungier material that followed through the decades then you'll probably love this one also. Danny Whitten does actually have not too bad a voice as do the other members(when given a chance to vocalise)
two on here co-writeen with NY..."dance dance dance" and "downtown" for which Neil's cover appeared on 'tonights the night' several years later.
Scottish band Nazereth and Randy Newman both covered tracks one and four, and Rod Stewart covered "i dont want to talk about it" all of which proves these guys are more than capable writers in their own right and do not simply hang off the Neil Young coat-tails!
allmusic rate this one 4.5/5 or 2.7 when converted, which is line with my score here also!
I LOVE THIS ALBUM

from my library (cd)
Bob's seventh album, a double on vinyl. Acoustic Bob was history. I would miss him but I have that history and you
can't go back. Al Kooper is back on this one along with the first appearance of future Band member Robbie Robertson
and his touring band The Hawks. About any style you could imagine on this album, with superb lyrics as usual. Just
Like A Woman has always been one of my favorite Dylan songs of all time. Just beautiful along with Visions Of
Johanna and Sad Eyed Lady Of The Lowlands. Nothing I don't like on here, with an even split between love and like
tracks. On the downside, Rainy Day Women has never been at the top of my list. I think it's all that background
talking and laughing that's distracting. The album peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 chart in the USA, where it
eventually went double-platinum, and reached No. 3 in the UK. Continue to be amazed by the lack of Dylan tracks on youtube.
