Iota Wrote:Sounds amazing. Is there any relationship between Sunn O))) and O))) aside from the name?
I'm pretty sure "O)))"
is "Sunn O)))". The record did come out on Southern Lord, which is the label that releases all of Sunn O)))'s albums.
Ah ha!
Quote:In May of 2007 Sunn O))) did a pacific rim tour, which included Japan and Australia. The lineup consisted of O'Malley, Anderson, Ambarchi and Csihar, but upon arrival to Melbourne, Australia, Sin Nanna was invited to join them for a improvisational performance. Pentemple was the result of this performance...

Bob Dylan - Tell Tale Signs
This is volume 8 in his Bobness' Bootleg series. As the booklet notes say, for most artists 8 albums constitutes a lengthy career...
It's a collection of alternate takes & rarities recorded between '89 & '06, and this sort of thing usually means sub-standard rubbish. This, however, is superb. The alternate takes are a revelation, shining new light through old windows, and the live tracks are universally good.
Not bad for stuff left on the studio floor...

Emerson Lake & Palmer - Works Volume 1
This album post-dates Punk's year-zero, but if it had been released a little earlier would have been precisely the sort of thing that gave rise to punk rock:
- A double album, with three sides devoted to solo compositions, and the fourth being full band material
- Loads of oafish time signatures
- Several tracks being "adaptations" of orchestral pieces
- Includes a Keith Emerson "Piano Concerto"
- A full orchestra used on most of the album
- Lots of weakish pretentious lyrics
Not a great album, but worth a listen once in a while !?

Richard Thompson - 1000 Years of Popular Music
Listened to this live album in preparation for seeing this very show in Canterbury tomorrow night.
It's not really a rock album, but RT is nominally a rock musician, and does contain some rock songs.
RT was asked for a list of his fave songs from the last millenium by Playboy magazine. Taking them at their word he produced a list including a 12th century minstrel song, some medieval folk songs, some Gilbert & Sullivan, a few jazz standards, and several modern songs. His list was never published, but spawned the idea for this live show.
Really looking forward to seeing him live...

"First We Take Manhattan" - Leonard Cohen
From I'm Your Man. A great album with some amazing poetry. The melodies are excellent too. I don't know if this fits in this thread though, considering that the album in question is so electronic in nature.

I'm part way through a lengthy magazine article about Leonard Cohen, and have been thinking about enlarging my small collection of his albums.
I'm Your Man is a favourite of mine, Alex. How about The Future, have you heard that one ?
I also like Famous Blue Raincoat by Jennifer Warnes. She's one of his ex-backing singers, and the album is solely LC covers.

Richard Thompson - Faithless
Bought this at an RT gig on Sunday night. It's a live recording from 1985.
Thompson was rated in the top 20 guitarists ever by Rolling Stone a few years ago, but his understated playing on studio albums would probably leave some wondering why.
His live playing is different, and when he lets rip, it's easier to see why he's so highly regarded. He's also a very good song-writer.
Fine album by an under-rated talent.
