What Are You Listening To?

WHITE LIES "ritual" cd,2010. #3 UK, #95 US

one of Tems recommendations for me...
second album by this London,UK trio...
sound is firmly planted in the music of the UK from the early 1980s...
lots and lots of Joy Division sounds here, bits of Depeche Mode and Spandau Ballet's "to cut a long story short" type sounds.
all very good stuff IMO, good to hear that stuff reinvented for the '00s...
its a bit of a grower, taking several listens to strike a chord with me, but well worth the effort...

Another out of the new cd stack. Fell for that Helplessness Blues but the album doesn't meet my expectations. Do
love one other track, one bomb (the dreaded instrumental), making it an easy pass. The Seattle bands second album.
Love the harmonies the guys put out and the band gives me a Band Of Horses, National feel. The UK was on board for
the first album, but it took the follow up three yearslater for the US to jump on taking this album to #2. Top 10
album in numerous countries. Grammy nominated for Best Folk Album which I didn't even know there was a category for.
They lost out to Civil Wars. Once again not much of what I call folk music on here. I guess it's because folks
listen to it. Genres are so mind blowing. Helplessness Blues was the first single here with Battery Kinzie as the
follow up. Those are my two love tracks. I'm sure this album will get a much better score with more plays.

Back to the weekly pull from the "new" stack. Picked this one up based on one of you guys. I never remember who. I
have a PJ Harvey album from 1995 titled To Bring You My Love. This album is nothing like that one. Is this the same
artist, lol. The earlier one was Alanis for me, whereas this one is more Kate Bush territory. Stepping into the
performance art arena. This just squeaks into the like range for me. Would take some listening to grow. This is her
eighth album and it got a lot of praise in England, where she has always been more popular than here. PJ admits this
is a departure for her, just learning to play the autoharp which is used quite a bit, and even her vocal style. The
album was nominated for multiple awards for the year, taking down Englands coveted Mercury prize, and made quite a
few best of the year lists. Wish I could say it was as good for me. Didn't love anything and did not like four of
the twelve tracks. Went to #8 in the UK, #4 in Australia, #23 in Canada, and #32 in the US.

NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS "kicking against the pricks" cd,1986.

Nick and his Bad Seeds fourth allbum...
ever heard him do his take on Gene Pitney,Glenn Campbell,Cash,Seekers,John Lee Hooker,Ram Jam,Big 'O', Jimmy Webb etc etc?...well, here's your chance...
yes, Cave has done a covers album and this one is it!, only difference is that Cave re-works the tracks into his own distinct desolate, desperate, dark style.
incidently, this was the album that broke Cave in the UK....his version of Johnny cash's "the singer" from this one made it all the way to #1 on the "indi, alt" singles chart back in the day.
several tracks dont work for me here, while others are IMO equal to or better than the originals...good to see a covers set that isnt a carbon copy of the originals, so full marks to Cave for simply being "nick cave"....
