Looking Back At Some Classics
I do love this song
Music Head Wrote:#460 - George Harrison - My Sweet Lord - 1970

running recap for me - 3's=22, 2's=14, 1's=5
this one - **
from the album: All Things Must Pass
Written by George Harrison
Produced by George Harrison, Phil Spector
Chart action: #1 US, #1 UK, #1 Australia

the players:
George Harrison – vocals, acoustic guitar, slide guitars, backing vocals
Eric Clapton – acoustic guitar
Billy Preston – piano
Gary Wright – electric piano
Pete Ham – acoustic guitar
Tom Evans – acoustic guitar
Joey Molland – acoustic guitar
Klaus Voormann – bass
Ringo Starr – drums, percussion
Jim Gordon – drums, percussion
Mike Gibbins – tambourine
John Barham – harmonium

Wish I could say I love this one. Not gonna happen. Once again, it's the lyrics. I have to have some. We
all know about the lawsuit, blah-blah-blah. Sounded more like Oh Happy Day than He's So Fine to me. And to
have to pay your ex-manager was the low blow. Didn't know this was first recorded by Billy Preston. The
first hit by an ex-Beatle. Take that John and Paul. George was all in for his Hare Krishna period and let
it be known here. Written while he was on tour with Delaney & Bonnie. Check out the cast on the recording.
Didn't know there were that many instruments on there.

My Sweet Lord has always been one of my favorite George Harrison songs, it's right up there with Here Comes the Sun, as for Paradise City i've always liked it but i've never considered it one of their best.

#458 - Sam Cooke - Cupid - 1961

running recap for me - 3's=23, 2's=15, 1's=5
this one - ***
from the album: various compilations
Written by Sam Cooke
Produced by Luigi Creatore
Chart action: #17 US, #7 UK

the players:
Sam Cooke
other people

Not much I don't love by Mr. Cooke. With 30 top 40 hits in a brief seven year career, that's a lot to
love. Said to be one of the pioneers of soul music. He was an activist in the civil rights movement of the
60's, Sam was on a drunken rampage at an L.A. motel when shot by the manager, ruled a justifiable
homicide. At the young age of 33, Sam would have had a lot left to contribute.

Lyrics

Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover's heart for me, for me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover's heart for me

Now, I don't mean to bother you
But I'm in distress
There's danger of me losing all of my happiness
For I love a girl who doesn't know I exist
And this you can fix

So, Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover's heart for me, nobody but me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover's heart for me

Now, Cupid, if your arrow make her love strong for me
I promise I wll love her until eternity
I know between the two of us her heart we can steal
Help me if you will

So, Cupid, draw back your bow
And let your arrow go
Straight to my lover's heart for me, nobody but me
Cupid, please hear my cry
And let your arrow fly
Straight to my lover's heart for me

Now, Cupid
Don't you hear me
Calling you?
I need you
Cupid
Help me
I need you
Cupid
Don't fail

#457 - Chubby Checker - The Twist - 1960

running recap for me - 3's=23, 2's=15, 1's=6
this one - *
from the album: various compilations
Written by Hank Ballard
Produced by Karl Mann
Chart action: #1 US

the players:
Chubby Checker - lead vocal
Dream Lovers - backing vocals
other people playing things

Never cared for those lame dance craze songs. This had to be one of the first. Began as a b-side to
Teardrops On Your Letter for Hank Ballard & The Midnighters in 1958. Revived at Dick Clarks suggestion
with Chubby Checker taking it to #1. Chubby tapped it for all it was worth, with several versions of the
original to follow along with the follow up Let's Twist Again. I'm sure he recorded other things, but I
would guess The Twist phenomenon is all anyone knows of. Chubby is still out there, probably still
twisting.

Lyrics

Come on baby let's do the twist
Come on baby let's do the twist
Take me by my little hand and go like this
Ee-oh twist baby baby twist
Oooh-yeah just like this
Come on little miss and do the twist

My daddy is sleepin' and mama ain't around
Yeah daddy is sleepin' and mama ain't around
We're gonna twisty twisty twisty
'Til we turn the house down
Come on and twist yeah baby twist
Oooh-yeah just like this
Come on little miss and do the twist

Yeah you should see my little Sis
You should see my my little Sis
She really knows how to rock
She knows how to twist
Come on and twist yeah baby twist
Oooh-yeah just like this
Come on little miss and do the twist
Yeah rock on now
Yeah twist on now
Twist.
