PAUL McCARTNEY "mccartney II" vinyl,cd,deluxe boxset, 1980

album chart action: UK #1, US #3, AU #4

singles chart action:
"coming up"................#2UK, #2AU, #1US, #1CAN.
"waterfalls".................#9UK, #31AU, #106US.
"temporary secretary"..no chart action.

Paul's twelfth solo set, that is, if you include 1966s"the family way" and 1977s "thrillington" albums...
album was titled "mccartneyII" because like "mccartney"(1970) Macca played all instruments and produced the album himself..
this album really wasnt going to be released initially, but Macca had been playing around in his home studio with new equipment he had installed and made up these songs, one night shortly after Ringo was around their house for dinner and asked Paul if he had any new songs, he played him these tracks off the album and Ringo apparently said "oh, so this is your new album", it was then McCartney thought "well yes i guess it is!"...
this album is quite experimental for the time it was made, tracks like "bogey music","darkroom" and "temporary secretary" were unlike anything else that came before it...even the instrumental tracks "frozen jap" and "front parlour" were early pre-cursors to his avante-guard Fireman albums...
"coming up",well the video anyway, was revolutionary for the time with Macca playing the parts of all the band members in the "plastic mac" band, which again incidently, was another little dig at John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band...so it was tit-for-tat between the pair of them until John's death only a few months later..
strange to note that the "coming up" single was different on its release in the US...those yankees made the "b" side Wings live version the "a" side and relegated the studio version to the "b" side of the single...
theres two little known/forgotten gems on this album also that stand up with the best material he has released in the superb ballad "one of these days" and "summers day song"...
that aside this is a pretty good album by Macca, not his best but almost perfection compared to his more recent outings on cd...

Jerome Wrote:Ian Anderson - Rupi's Dance - a solo album - quite good. Never delivers a bad album.

Brian Eno - Music for Films - ambient music that can best be described as sound collages that seem to convey a variety of emotions/moods but none of these pieces are structured in the traditional sense. Very fond of this album when I am in a contemplative sort of mood. The 3am - can't sleep - in deep thought - sort of album. Very difficult to pin down what I like about it. It has a sense of space and depth. Only for serious space cadets!

Camel - Moonmadness - not my favourite of theirs but it does have some unique moments. Like Another Night & Air Born and the very mysterious 'Spirit of the Water'. A band still finding their feet - their best work was still to come.
