What Are You Listening To?

Weekly Bob Dylan pull. Not positive but I think this is about the point for me where Bob's albums became
nothing special for me. Still highly anticipated, but usually a let down. There were still always one or
two superb tracks but more disappointments. The one excellent track here is Tight Connection To My Heart
which I think is among his best work. On most of these tracks the background vocalists are too foreground,
overshadowing Bob. Only the last track on this album is that not the case. The album peaked at #33 here
and #11 in the UK. I do love the coat Bob is wearing on the cover and also in the rare video for that
first track.

after the brilliant "infidels" album anything he released would have been a dissapointment IMO.... i dont have this one, but my mum does,i was never keen on it so i just never bought it but i did love your favourite track and "when the night comes....", the rest were so-so IMO.

cant wait to read your thoughts on "down in the groove" in a couple of weeks time, that one is my least favourite Dylan album ever, even the lead off single "silvio" was very average for a man of his talent

JOHN MELLENCAMP "john mellencamp" cd, 1997.

theres an old saying here..."you can take the boy out of the country but you cant take the country out of the boy"....same goes for john..."you can take the Mellencamp out of the cougar but you cant take the Cougar out of Mellencamp"...
he certainly lost his way here on this one...no fires in his belly whatsoever, just a very mediocre collection of songs from JM...he blamed his PR guys for not promoting the album properly, but its pretty hard to promote something this lame and get sales...this is the worst selling album of his career, and my score will reflect that at the end of this...
sounds like he doesnt know whether to be edgy john or pop john here and this ends up being a big mish-mash of nothing by his standards, even the tracks that get 'like' scores from me only barely make the grade except "when the world began" and "im not running anymore" which genuinely arent too bad IMO...the rest, well forget them and stick to "american fool", "scarecrow" a best of set or the sun sessions one he did a couple of years ago...which is a big shame as this guy does know how to write great songs when he puts his mind to it!
sorry for the lack of available links here, and a shame theres not one for my favourite track!

Jersey band that started as Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Dropped the Asbury for this one. Not sure
why unless they felt it regionalized them. The Boss was a supporter in those early days and did some gigs
with them. He probably bailed after this one. I became a fan after their 1978 album Hearts Of Stone. This
one doesn't come close to that. Horns were very up front on that earlier one but only show up on a few
tracks here. That dreadful synthesizer is what drags this down. Guess they thought they had to go with the
times. The album does creep into the like range but it was a stretch. Nothing I love and three I don't
like. It peaked at #164. Hard to believe the band is still around with no original members other than
Johnny.

MOTT THE HOOPLE "super hits" cd,1997.

another best of set that really isnt what it is called....yeh sure they had a few hits in the UK, but they werent 'super hits'....
the band started off in the early 1960s, took several name and personell changes to get to Mott The Hoople at the turn of the 1970s before they actually did any good in the charts, and that was probably mostly due to the fact David Bowie produced them and wrote their biggest hit 'all the young dudes' and gave them Lou Reed's "sweet jane" to record also.
Bowie also originally wrote "drive-in saturday' for them but he wasnt happy with the way it turned out, thus he recorded it and released it as a solo single.
very Bowie-esque sounds here throughout, touches of The Rolling Stones on "jerkin' crocus" also.
this one contains their five top20 UK hits from 72-74....they didnt do as well as the other glam rockstars of the day, but they did leave us with several little pieces of music magic IMO

The groups debut album and a must have for any proper history. Still debatable whether the
group started as Chicago or Chicago Transit Authority. Settled by the liner notes for me in
which producer James Guercio introduces them as the latter but ends with "just call them
Chicago". Henceforth that's what they would be known as. If not for the two instrumental tracks
on this double album, it would rate as a masterpiece. One of those the dreadful Free Form
Guitar, which is just distortion to me. Doesn't bring down the seven love tracks though. Makes
it hard to pin down a favorite. One of the first groups, along with BS&T that really got me
into horns being used in rock music. No one does that blend better. Four singles released of
which Beginnings and Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is charted the highest at #7. The
album went to #17 and the following began. That intro to Someday is just fantastic.
