Okay, not everyone is into melodic death metal. I get that. But if you are generally into metal, I suggest you check out Dark Tranquility. As gateway albums I suggest, Character, Fiction, and Damage Done. Then move onto Haven, The Mind's I, and We are the Void. After that, The Gallery, Skydancer, and Projector.
Just my two cents. Even though these guys are fairly well-known. I feel that they are underrated. The Gallery contains some superb arrangements, and while the first three albums I mention above don't stray too far from the verse/chorus paradigm, it's solid stuff.
Some of my favorite tracks: "Monochromatic Stains," "Terminus," "Inside the Particle Storm," "The Bow and the Arrow," "Insanity's Crescendo," "The Mundane and the Magic," "The Wonders at Your Feet," and "Not Built to Last."
Not exactly uplifting music, but great, great metal, IMO.
