What Are You Listening To?
I think JJ Cale is some sort of guitar hero among guitar players...unique style, I don't know ?
Jerome Wrote:An open letter to the Music Discussion Forum

Dear forum members,

Could you please advise as to whether one of your esteemed members, the honourable Music Head, has possibly ever listened to a phonographic recording made by the artist known as J.J Cale. I would be very interested to hear his views on this subject.

Yours sincerely
Jerome Disney

HERMAN'S HERMITS "the very best of" cd,2005.

double cd containing every "a side" and "b side" of their single releases from the mid sixties through to their demise in 1970/71....
interesting to note that these guys were more popular outside of the UK than in it...
having more US top 10 hits in the 1960s than any other British Invasion group except for The Beatles, also interesting to note that vocalist Peter Noone was only 19 when he scored his irst week at #1 in the US...making him the youngest ever UK vocalist to reach the peak out there!, also, the first band from Manchester to score a #1 hit in the US...took until Oasis did it in 1996 with "wonderwall" for another Manc' band to achieve it!
also, in the linear notes for this i was surprised to find that Jimmy Page and John Paul jones(both better known later for Led Zepplin) played on most of their earlier singles!
strange that songs like "mrs.brown youve got a lovely daughter","leaning on the lamp post", "dandy" and "henery the eighth i am" were never issued as singles in the UK, would have thought that theyd be right up the british music buying public's alley???strange indeed????
so, what we have here is a two cd set containing fifty six tracks, the running order is in chronological ordr also, with the b-side of the singles following directly after the a-sides, good stuff to see the progression of these guys, i wasnt aware until the other day neither that Peter Noone still plays the Vegas club circuit to this day, obviously living off his former glory days not unlike Wayne Newton LMAO!
anyway,
fifty six tracks equates to:

3s=14
2s=30
1s=12

for an overall score of 2.1, which is a bloody good effort for so many tracks IMO, im pretty sure had this collection have just consisted of their "a-sides" then it surely would have got a love rating, nonetheless, still a great career spanning set and well worth the money in purchasing IMO!

forgot this

actually I'm more of a John Cale (Paris 1919) than a J.J. Cale fan
5 is the only one I have
haven't heard it in years so I can't give a good evaluation
can't say I can even recall any of the tracks on it
so I must not have been impressed

I am not a great fan of Neil Diamond but his HAG album is my favourite intro to a live concert. Just amazing. Superb arrangement. I have listened to this a thousand times - never tire of it.

ROD STEWART "every picture tells a story" cd,1971

one of Rod's earliest albums...
many people rate this as his best...not me!, to be Frank,i cant see what people see in it...especially when half of the tracks are cover versions...????
'thats all right"...abysmal cover of the Elvis Sun Records classic!, "tomorrow is a long time", a Dylan cover,which i simply dont like by whoever records it(including Elvis!)
"reason to believe"...the classic Tim Hardin song...i do like this one by whoever does it, and it is my pick of the tracks on here...even beating the so-called classic "maggie may",which i like also,but radio still overkills that one down this way...incidently, this song was the a-side to the single with "maggie may" back in the day but i guess radio stations,for reasons known only to them, flipped the record over and started playing "maggie may"...in a not dissimilar fashion to what happened with KISS with "detroit rock city" backed with the classic "beth" also!
a few rockers on here, a few ballads also, but this is probably close,if not, the worst Rod Stewart album i own i think!

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

worst track: tomorrow is a long time
best track: reason to believe

tracks:

1. every picture tells a story *
2. seems like a long time **
3. thats all right *
4. tomorrow is along time *
5. maggie may **
6. mandolin wind *
7. im losing you *
8. reason to believe **
