BASEMENT BIRDS "basement birds" 2010.

album chart action" #12 AU.

single chart action:
"waiting for you".....no chart placings
"not the one"..........no chart placings
"bus stop-ep"..........no chart placings

group contains members of two Aussie groups, Eskimo Joe and Jebadiah...
unlike theri bands, this side project is acoustis, somewhat folky, even Crosby/Stills and Nash in places...
some brilliant material on here, but its let down with a few that actually bore me to tears, shame, because these guys do have talent...

Getting into Alexander Rybak and Takashi Yoshimatsu, a Japanese guy who's been composing music in the western style for the last few decades. My favourite piece by him is Cyber Bird.

Welcome aboard MD, Semi! Have you heard anything by another Japanese composer , Ryuichi Sakamoto? He's very good !

PAUL WELLER "illumination" cd, 2002

album chart action: #1 UK.

singles chart action:
"its written in the stars".....#7 UK.
"leafy mysteries"..............# 23 UK.

Weller's sixth studio album and eighteenth to that point....
the songs here are less introverted and personal than what has become the Weller 'norm', they are songs of joy, happiness and contentment. the production work is on par with 'stanley road' and that is good considering it is Wellers first attempt at self production. Kelly Jones from Stereophonics co-wrote and duets on 'call me #5', 'a bullet for everyone' is the only real political/social comment song on the album, highlighting the fact that Governments have all the money in the world to spend on warfare but not on food and shelter for the masses. elsewhere on 'all good books' Weller writes that God,Allah, Mohammad etc would be dissapointed with the faithful and the way they twist words to justify their actions. 'who brings joy' is another tune inspired by one of his children. the album reached #1 UK, the Style Council-esque 'its written in the stars' #7 and the jingle-jangle Byrds-like 'leafy mysteries'#23.
overall this is a very underrated album and well worth a listen.

Let's start with the bonus cd which is the last 7 tracks listed. Three remakes of previous tracks plus
a Canadian language track which I don't speak. It is actually the French translation of a previous love
track, Fields Of Progeny, but I didn't need that. So we've got four of those seven tracks that do
nothing but drag the score down. Could have been a love album if not for all the bonus. Of course I
don't have to play that one, which I probably won't in the future. The first cd holds up well with 4
love tracks. Had not heard of this Canadian band until this album. Picked it up after hearing it on the
deceased AOL album listening site. Leadman Tony Dekker has listed his influences as Gram Parsons and
Hank Williams. Neither of those come through here and Fleet Foxes or Bon Iver is what I hear, which
puts it inalternative for me. This is the bands fifth album and the first to see any chart action here,
and that was only on the Top Heatseekers chart. Apparently there was little heat generated. So for now
the Canadian homeland is the only place these guys are known and that's by the fringe few.

don't think I had a choice when I ordered it
with 4 duplicate tracks, I would have passed

Fields was my second best for sure
