One hit wonders !

Status Quo have released upwards of 80 singles in their career, many of which were top10 hits in the UK/Australia(and other european countries....)

they were one of the most successful rock bands of the early/mid 1970s....

they arent what i'd call 'heavy metal'....moreso blues rock, similar to Humble Pie in a lot of ways

You have to remember that in the 70s, that WAS metal. Cheap Trick and Kiss (whom I actually saw live on the same bill once) were called metal back then. But I recall Status Quo being lumped in with the hard rock/metal set of that era (little of which would pass as metal now). But virtually none of it was played on American radio but I always saw their names in the various rock music zines and journals of the 70s so I knew they were doing something.

I do not consider Cheap Trick, Kiss or Status Quo as metal! IMHO !...Rock and at times hard rock but not metal in my mind!

Metal is ...Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera, Queensryche...bands like that! They are considered "Old School" metal before the more extreme metal bands emerged! Now there are several metal genres to the point of absurdness!.lol

Here's a big hit from Status Quo!

Trivia for you all:

three of Status Quo's members used to be bricklayers back in the day who actually worked for Paul Weller's dad.
not sure which member it was, but one of them, actually taught Paul Weller his first few chords on guitar when he was around 10 or 11(ish)

In the 70s, there was nothing called "metal." The term was "heavy metal" and it wasn't a genre, it was loud, hard rock with distortion and even Southern rock was often included in it. Cheap Trick was definitely called heavy metal then because I read a review of their "Dream Police" album by Robert Christgau in Creem and he specifically referred to them as heavy metal. It was a loose term then and a lot of bands fell under it and sometimes just certain songs by a band fell under it rather than the band itself. Zeppelin was considered heavy metal. So was Sweet. Even T. Rex despite being the kings of glitter.

Metallica, Slayer, Pantera, Queensryche and Megadeth did not exist in the 70s. I'm surprised you didn't mention Blue Oyster Cult or AC/DC.
