Julius Watkins, Steve Turre and Dorothy Ashby have one thing in common--all pioneered or were the only one to play an instrument not normally associated with jazz.
French horn--Mr. Watkins has been on the scene since the '50's and been brilliant all this time:

Talking of unusual instruments, I use products from a company called Sonniccouture in my own projects - they have some pretty unusual instruments. Granted it's not jazz, but I could easily see them being used in that context.

What a marvellous combo of instrument and voice. What a great share! Can't let it go with just one:

There's another excellent swing uke player,
Gerald Ross. A couple by him: solo in a studio:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L-ckVtz7rE << nice description of his ax Then:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m4gVT7z0wiE << another solo piece
BUT I really wanted to go another way, to 8 strings--
The Jazz Mandolin Project. Best place to start is '99's
Tour de Flux--AMG makes a point of saying they are literally and figuratively all over the map (bop, avant-garde, world styles). Here's some other stuff:

Jamie Masefield labels his music "jazz", who are we to disagree?
