It almost seems a pointless argument...music taste seems more determinable based on one's Briggs-Meyers personality type. For example, I'm an INTP, so James Maynard Keenan (TOOL, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer) is somewhat of a god to me. Check out the forums at INTP Central and you'll find dozens of threads devoted to TOOL and Keenan. It's strange, but a pattern exists.

Personally, the 'magic' of the following escape my comprehension:
The Beatles
The Grateful Dead (artwork excepted!)
Bob Dylan

I'm sure that's due to some mental deficiency on my part...I mean, I do love TOOL after all.

INFJ.

Must do some research to see if this throws up anything interesting regarding affinity to particular musicians...

how do you know what type you are? where do you get tested? like tiggi said, maybe i can find artists that appeal to me based on my type and the correlation found in the type of music. someone should conduct more research on this and report back.

what does INTP stand for? i'll try and find coorelations later to report back also.

Hi Bryce...

A good point of departure for the Briggs-Myers personality tests, including links to the tests themselves, is here:
Myers-Briggs Type Indicator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

INTP is Introversion/iNtuition/Thinking/Perceiving. My polar opposite would be ESFJ Extroversion/Sensing/Feeling/Judging. The parameters don't necessarily match common definitions. For example, 'judging' doesn't mean 'judgmental'. Check out the descriptions of the wiki page for a full explanation.

INTP Central forums are here:
INTP Central

Some really interesting stuff in the music forum.

The plethora of metalcore bands that are popular with the youth currently. The majority of the songs/records aren't even produced well and the music is about as interesting as the neanderthals that listen to it. Given, some of my friends listen to this kind of music... Exclusively. I don't understand it.

Okay you guys!!! i found a theory but i'm not sure how great or accurate it is but here is one possble explaination!!

Music consists of rhythm, melody, harmony. Lyrics may be part too but these arent actually music, but poetry, the rest of the singing can be divided into the other 3 parts as well so Im gonna leave this one out.

Rhythm is mainly about details, context usually only matters little. Usually, rhythm makes us (want to) move, be it dancing, clapping hands or whatever.
Details and kinetic energy activating? That sounds an awful lot like Se. Now im coming to the assumption: The stronger your preference for using Se is, the more influenced you are by the rhythm part of a music piece. As Se is strong in all artisans (Keirseys SP's, those MBTI types who have Se as primary or auxiliary function), im gonna call rhythm the Se music part.

Melody is about details as well, but usually doesnt count towards the "dance" factor of music. It is less about moving and more about feeling, although to a lesser extend than harmonics are. Usually, melody is what makes you recognise a particular song, for melody usually comes in phrases or motifs, which are actually what you will remember from a song first and best. Melody has to be structured and composed to fit into the song. Fi and Ti are the functions that are usually used for that. Fi more than Ti though as music as art is about feeling so Fi is a better at it. But still, Ti is often used in composing melody, which can be seen in craftsman musicians like Dragonforce (who I call your typical ISTP/ESTP musicians), although it is more about technique than about feeling. I'll call melody the Fi/Ti-part of music.

Harmonics as third part of music adds complexity and song structure. It is usually about evoking feelings and getting the "vibe" of a song across to the listener, it adds meaning to the song. Try to write a song without any harmonics and you'll notice that it wont sound interesting as a song, although it may have a different usage. So harmonics are complex and adds meaning (non-lyrics meaning :p ) to a song, which sounds like a job for Ne or Ni. So, undoubtly unexpected, I call harmonics the Ne/Ni part of music. Im not 100% satisfied with this as it leaves out the feeling which is created with harmonics. But music is all about feeling anyways, so it would have to be part of all parts. So Fi and Fe can take this job too. But I'd say that Ne/Ni is important to create complex harmonics...

Anyways, by showing which functions are best at the task of making a certain aspect of music, we might be able to type various musicians quite accurately by analysing their music. An ISFP musician might create the best danceable (rhythm) and best melody lines, fit it all together quite nicely, but the songs may lack in the harmonic department. I say may lack, because of Fi being important to the creation of harmonics, they're usually not bad at it, they may just lack the Ne or Ni to create more complex harmonies.

On the other hand, an INFP musician may make very moving melody and harmonics, but the created music wont be that danceable as the INFP wont be so eager and good at creating rhythms that make you want to move.

:blah:

if you've read to here your attention span is huge and you are awesome! thanx and sorry it was so long.

Admittedly, it'll take me awhile to sort all that out, but it basically makes sense (assuming MBTI is a sound construct). Nice post Bryce.
