One hit wonders !

I could never figure out why this band didn't release more than one album let alone one hit!

This song has been haunting my psyche lately...The Captain of Her Heart!...(1985) by the one hit wonder band from Switzerland... Double (pronounced Do Blah) consisting primarily of the duet Felix Haug on drums and keyboards and Kurt Maloo on guitar and vocals! There's a nice jazzy soft rock feel here a little reminiscent of Boz Scaggs!

The band lasted only five years from 1983-87, releasing three albums and ten singles. Their one hit reached number 4 in the US, number 8 in the UK and only number 11 in Switzerland. Apparently Double recorded several tracks with Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera which were never released due to "legal issues" ?

The beautiful soprano sax on here is played by guest artist Christian Ostermeier.

SteveO Wrote:One hit wonders happen when the artist or band release a great song and just can't seem to ever release another one that comes even close ! Perhaps the artist or band split up after their hit or unfortunately a member passes away or becomes ill. I don't really believe that thay really had no talent in most cases! There are so many artists out there competing for that elusive hit! Whatever the reason, the one hit wonder has at times entertained us all!

I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THIS ONE HIT WONDER...sung by Linda Perry!

Another thing to consider is that an artist may move on to other aspects of the music biz. This is certainly true of Ms. Perry.: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linda_Perry << It's also true of Christopher Cross. 13 albums but only one hit--"Sailing" in the '80's.

CRAZY-HORSE Wrote:im not even sure exactly what the term "one hit wonder" really means..as ive heard several meanings over the years from:

1. only ever released one single

2. had a #1 hit but no other chart entries under that name

3. had a #1 hit but no other top40 hits

etc etc....

if reason #2 is correct as the Brits think it is, then Elton John/Kiki Dee were one hit wonders as a duo, Macca/Stevie were also one hit wonders, yet as we all know, technically none of these were one hit wonders to me

also,
an artist could be classed a one hit wonder in one country, yet have numerous hits in other countries, so really, what is the answer...

again, Paul Weller only ever had one hit in the US("my everchanging moods",style council, which reached #29 out there), but in the UK he is fast approaching 100 charting singles...go figure!

Easybeats only ever had one hit outside Australia("friday on my mind"), yet they had some 20-25 hits here...!

im sure there'd be some countries where Neil Young and Bob Dylan would be classed as "one hit wonders" also, LMAO!!!!!

Bro Crazy-Horse has got it in one--just the right question and range of answers. My answer is someone that has some permanency (ad hoc groupings need not apply) and charted just once anywhere--the here-for-a-minute-then-gone-forever folks. WHY they are 1-hit doesn't too much interest me (in most cases, how can you know?). Hope that helps

This song, written for them, makes perfect sense--they lived and worked across the harbor from NYC. Equally well, I like the Manhattan Transfer's version. Here live on TV 33 years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7YsE-wQn9c << weren't we all younger and more beautiful/handsome then? They sure were...

that one was amazing
sometimes 1 hit is all you need to become legends

About Iron Butterfly: 1-hit wonders they may have been but that album sold 30 Million copies and they were the first to receive the RIAA platinum award. And BTW that snippet hardly suffices--they rode that horse for 44 years, so set aside 19 minutes 'cuz here 'tis: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pA7V68w5hiA

This highlights their only major hit but surely not the only one--several cracked the Top 100. I like these 2 songs by them (if I may indulge myself):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L82_N3UPPDs << I prefer this Gospel-ier, grittier version to the Curtis Mayfield-led Impressions original

1-Hit Wonder as a soloist maybe but as the last part of his wiki shows, he had a pretty solid career: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_Mckenzie
