What Are You Listening To?
Jonathan Wilson’s Frankie Ray. Some people refer to it as his ‘lost debut’ – he made it long before Gentle Spirit. Problems with the record label at the time seem to have interfered with its distribution.

What an incredibly talented muso. He plays all the instruments himself, and builds such interesting layers of sound IMO. Quality work.

compilation album - #147 US

This is listed as a compilation album and contains the entire Japan vinyl release of the Night on the Sun ep with previously unreleased tracks
which were chosen to be left off The Moon & Antarctica. I thought it was a regular studio album. This is why I didn't get the concept part of
The Moon & Antarctica. They left pieces of the concept on the cutting room floor. How was I supposed to figure that out? This album just misses
a like mark from me. Only 8 tracks and 1 of those an instrumental, clocking in at only 33 minutes. Also contains a different version of I Came
As A Rat which was on The Moon & Antarctica. I guess with the minor success of that album they wanted to get some of their material out that had
been unheard by the new fans. Not sure if this attracted any.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Thanks SteveO! I know Andrew Bird but hadn’t heard Patrick Watson. Sounds to me like a cross between James Vincent McMorrow and Antony Hegarty. That would probably horrify both of them, LOL! Will listen to more of his stuff.

If you liked that Jonathan Wilson clip, perhaps you’ll enjoy this one too – I think I might’ve posted it before, apologies if so. He’s well respected for production - for the sound quality of his analogue recording studio, amongst other things. He has Graham Nash and David Crosby collaborating on this track from his latest album, Fanfare. Love it -

Any discussion of multi-instrumentalists that doesn't feature Yusef Lateef front and center isn't worth the powder to blow it up--he sometimes played many reeds AT THE SAME TIME:

IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS "sex & drugs & rock & roll-very best of" cd, 1999

Ian Dury...had the fullblown punk attitude from day one but often used ska/reggae and musichall/vaudevillian sounds in his songs...
was also an unlikely star...not very well groomed, couldnt really sing and vocals were the complete opposite to the gnerally smooth one of ska/reggae artists, rude, crude, brash by nature and almost totally incapacitated down his left side from polio...
but i guess he had the cheeky cockney rhymes and witt that endured him in the hearts and minds of the UK buying public...
lots of catchy tunes here, some autobiographical, mostly humorous, and some serious with a social conscience attatched, but good fun anyway IMO
he died in 2000 from memory from live cancer and was almost broke as he used to give his money away to charity to help children with serious illnesses.
all up one of those artists you either love or loathe,me, i love the guy and his music!

6th studio album - #18 US, #40 UK
Singles - Float On - #68 US, #46 UK

This is the album that turned me onto the band. Then I went back and picked up their last 2 prior to this. Not sure where I first heard Float On
but it stuck with me and remains my favorite, plus 4 other love tracks and nothing I don't like. The group listed 3 members prior to this album
with plenty of sidemen. Now we have morphed into a 5 piece. That touring stuff requires actual people, lacking in todays music with all the
electronic crap, but they don't care anymore. This is the bands best selling album reaching platinum status, and nominated for a Best
Alternative Album Grammy, losing to White Stripes.

second album from this Aussie synth-pop group...
first one was under the name Flowers, but someone in Europe already had that name so they needed to change it when they got Euro releases
i have two of theirs on vinyl, this one and one from around 78ish(man of colours)...
their songs are reasonably catchy for the most part and certainly more intelligent than most of the early 1980s synth-pop crap...
in some places, vocalist Iva Davies' has a distinct Bowie vocal quality, not surprising considering he was one of Davies' biggest influences growing up
all up, not a bad album but only the one i love pushes it across the line....i guess it is what it is and was what it was for that music period

.............We've Got Everything

The most recent album and it was 7 years ago. Come on guys, really? Still showing up at festivals. They did put out an ep of cutting room floor
stuff. This doesn't quite measure up to the last but that was hard to do. It reached #1 here and Canada but the sales were far short of Good
News. Johnny Marr joined the band for this album but left in 2009. Maybe he wanted to make some damn music somewhere. seven freakin years.

only album of hers i own...
love the fragile, insecure almost childlike uncertainty in the way she sings....
it sets the songs up perfectly for the themes of longing, loneliness, regret, sorry that fills the album....
not sure whether she deliberately picks themes like that or whether its all a part of her psychy, what with the troubled life she had almost up till that point, if it is its good to see her bare her soul, if its not, then shes a bloody good singer who knows where to put the emotion/emotional bits in the right places...
songs on here are generally solomn, both in lyrical content and musically and it works very well,
album gets a pretty good score from me,wasnt sure it would when i plucked it from the box(thinking time might not serve this well)...but it did and it has...
i was surprised to find this one charted higher here than all other locations on wiki, the single "running for our lives" only appeared to chart in Australia also and Australia was the only place where this one recieved a sales status(gold)...strange indeed!
