If you insist about coloring outside the lines, expect the consequences with no whimpering...and in some cases, no legs. "Risk sports" are called that for a reason--para-sailing, extreme zip-lining, American football, whatever. My sympathy only extends to those who face calamity they had no reason to expect or no way to avoid, not for avoidable circumstances. Hope those "victims" had a good healthcare plan--most of my peeps don't.

So what you're really saying is:

If it happens, bad luck, they deserve it????

And if so,
Does everyone in the US military who died in the mid-east and the FDNY workers who died on 9/11 deserve it and get no sympathy from you neither????

Same goes for the beheadings in Syria????

Maybe your attitude is one of "sod you jack,I'm alright!"

The fact is:
The military, emergency services workers, sports men and women, surfers know the risks they take but it doesn't mean they neither deserve nor expect to die doing what they love doing, so a little compassion wouldn't go astray my friend!!!!

Apples and oranges, C-H. I have great compassion for those who put themselves in harm's way for the betterment (or what they believe is the betterment) of others. I even have a large measure for such as the NFL playes suffering traumatic brain injuries (it was so hushed-up for so long they really couldn't have known those consequences of playing). To compare their deaths and afflictions with surfers is deeply insulting to them. Want to reconsider now?

To a shark, a surfer on a board can appear like their typical prey:

if you repeatedly bang your head against something
it might cause brain damage

Said football players were assured from the NFL on down that modern helmets protected them. The League spent a lot of time and effort squelching any data showing otherwise. Also remember we're not talking rocket scientists here.
