It's Fat Tuesday so let's PAAARTAY

Good as an excuse as any to present New Orleans wide variety of music (I'll leave the trad jazz/brass bands to others).
First up is a blind pianist who is also an award-winning photographer (!). Henry Butler is bedrock N. O.--muscular playing, mixing up many styles, often in the same song. Pure delight. Plus a vocalist and composer. His Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Butler Discog: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/henry-but...iscography << been recording in his name since '86 and nobody has a better track record of excellence--nobody. His Website: http://www.henrybutler.com/

Some tunes: A promo piece and some from his latest boffo project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxbPKLHl_A0 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtZCG4KlpQo and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XGzoQfXSbc << So glad to see Impulse ! Records back in the game. \
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRMfiAjKcfQ << He does real right on this N.O. classic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHfaSf5hFaY << These latest 2 showcase his immense imagination and talent
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYxDuSJtUUI << This should be and prolly has been studied as how a master takes a Gospel classic everywhere.

BONUS: 15-minute enlightening vid interview: http://www.culturecatch.com/vidcast/henry-butler/ << NO--he's not retro-nuevo--he's so "of the moment", he's inventing the shiz as he goes along, using elements...Not the same thing at all. What the sidemen do is their biz. If there's such a thing as "self-effacing bravura", he exemplifies it.

Anybody in New Orleans music or who wants to be has Allen Toussaint on speed-dial; Elvis Costello did a marvelous album, e.g.. Pianist/singer, song writer, producer, label owner--he's everything N.O. music. Sterling recordings since '58, and has written classic songs covered in all genres (see Wiki). Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allen_Toussaint Discog: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/allen-tou...iscography His Site: http://allentoussaint.com/ << This site may open with music--if so, at the bottom center, punch the white box.

N. O. music with a difference--a big one 'cuz it's Latin based...but look again at the founding members--pure N.O. all the way--let's don't forget New Orleans is a big Caribbean/Latin port, with all those influences and people coming in. Los Hombres Calientes. This is a supergroup, if that term has any meaning. Discog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOZ40BOEepU << 6 discs in 16 years and all these guys have many other obligations... They are on this small but important N.O. label: http://www.basinstreetrecords.com/artist...calientes/

Some tunes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOZ40BOEepU << I love watching Latin dancing << Tasteful 1-minute endpiece on this vid
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOZ40BOEepU << So raucous, so right. What I said above in my OP? I lied--mos' def' gonna be more Kermit Ruffins << Tuba/Sousaphone players are guaranteed employment in N.O.....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLsEu6rssps << Trenchant 1st Comment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=USnfq8mevkg << A little problem looking these guys up--I kept being offered gay Latin pix--understandable under the circumstances, I suppose.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmCA_Zyu9eg << the key to making this work is bedrock rhythm that they can float above/play against, and they sure have that.

Absolutely correct and he's due a presentation here. I myself am focusing on the lesser-known artists, but that's no block on another covering the Big Names (Dr. John, the Nevilles, etc.) or Cajun music--I'd welcome it.

A transplanted Englishman, pianist/organist, multi-instrumentalist, song writer, producer, a session man/sideman with a number of respected artists (has been Bonnie Raitt's pianist/music director for a long time), totally infused with that Caribbean/New Orleans ethos, feeling and practice--Jon Cleary. His to-the-heart-of-the-matter Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jon_Cleary_(musician) Great catalog, to great acclaim: http://www.allmusic.com/artist/jon-clear...iscography His Site: http://www.joncleary.com/news << He's played Caribbean Latin America with terrif Latin musicians--he's never stuck in a mode.

BONUS: A 1-hour interview and playing session--a must for song writers and piano players looking to write/play New Orleans style. He does it and then explains how you can do it. Mr. Cleary knows all this and is so willing to share. Stay tuned for his playing in the last 5 minutes--pay attention to his right foot on that right pedal.
