Marvin Gaye was a vital part of Soul music, first as an all-around multi-instrumental session musician at Motown and later in developing the idea and execution of Soul concept albums. His brutal childhood shaped him and his music.

Jesus of Nazareth I don't know that he was a musician (though he could certainly enliven any party--water into wine and all that). As an atheist, I still revere him...for what secular history tells us: a religious reformer and political organizer, who worked hard to empower the downtrodden against their oppressors. No, not the Romans who only exerted legal and admin supremacy--it was the high-born Jews the Pharisees and even more the Sadducees, that felt the most threatened. Their deal with the Romans was that neither interfered with the others activities and the Pharisees and Sadduccees, controlling religion and business, felt greatly threatened by this upstart. He had to die...and so they pressured the very reluctant Pontius Pilate to kill him.

We mourn his death today--his resurrection is celebrated on Sunday, which is why this isn't in the Easter Thread--don't want to be a drag.

Arthur Russell â experimental cellist and composer, died on this day in 1992 at the age of 40.
Classically trained, he liked to play with sound and was heavily involved in the underground disco and avant garde scenes in the late 70's and 80âs. He collaborated with a few well known artists including Jennifer Warnes, Allen Ginsburg, Phillip Glass and David Byrne.
He seems to have been a prolific procrastinator! Churned out a ton of work but never finished off a whole lot of it. I quote âHe left behind more than 1,000 tapes when he died, 40 of them different mixes of one songâ. He certainly left his mark and has garnered admiration from various quarters - here's one of his more accessible pieces ...

Colin Flooks died on this day in 1998, dammit! He was better known as Cozy Powell.
A phenomenal drummer whose work can be heard with The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, The Michael Schenker Group, Bedlam, Forcefield, Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, Peter Green, Yngwie Malmsteen and Brian May, as well as guest appearances/sessions with a whole host of others. Nothing like a bit of diversity!
Iâm posting âResurrectionâ from Brian Mayâs Back to the Light which I used to own and which has mysteriously disappeared, as music does from time to time. It showcases Cozy nicely and whilst Brian May might not be the greatest vocalist in rock history, he is still a genius.
