... 1938, urban legend has it that there was near pandemonium following the radio broadcast of Orson Welles’ opening reading of War of the Worlds on The Mercury Theatre on Air, on CBS. Some people had apparently tuned in late, missing the introduction, and genuinely believed the earth to be under attack by Martians.
