Another one that I thought of was 'Bohemian Rhapsody', if only for the fact that it is so completely off the wall and caught the whole industry by surprise. Just a thought.

i can tell you for a fact that BoRhap does not appear on my list Jerome,
whilst it is an incredible showcase of what could be achieved in the studio im not a big fan of the song overall.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
so on with the next song on my list:
"I WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU"
gorgeous love song written in 1973 by Dolly Parton.
the song was originally written with Elvis Presley in mind, however, when Dolly's publishers approached the Presley organisation Presley's manager Tom Parker demanded 50% of the writing and publishing royalties to pass the song on to Elvis.
Dolly refused saying that it took her heart and soul to write and she would not give away royalties to anyone for any reason, thus Elvis Presley never got the chance to record the song and i often wonder what he would have done with it.
Dolly herself, turned the song into a beautiful country love song ballad which i absolutely love but it took soul/R+B singer Whitney Houston to take it to the next level and send it somewhere Dolly Parton never could have dreamed of.
i have heard Linda Ronstadt sing it also but Whitney Houston owns this song IMO.

This is an interesting exercise. NO idea at all how you have managed to distil your best songs down to 20! Thought I'd have a try, for fun, and I'm on 98. Lol! Gordon Lightfoot would be on my list, just not sure exactly where at this stage. Great song.
I admire Whitney Houston for that rendition, which is outstanding - no question, despite not being a favourite for me.

just making a list of what i considered truly great songs that are examples of what i considered to be great songwriting,
all i did was like Ruby is now doing (trying to whittle down a vast list that she has compiled).
nothing scientific MH, just a bit of fun to get the ol' brain cells reactivating again.

next song on the list (but not in any particular order)
"UNCHAINED MELODY"
was written in 1955 by Alex North and Hy Zaret as part of the score for a prison movie titled "unchained".
the song itself is about unrequited love but like "every breath you take" by Police it is often misunderstood and used as the first dance at weddings and has reached the #1 spot on the UK singles charts by no less than four different artists...
i have heard many different versions of the song and all renditions i have heard are good but none surpass the iconic version sung by the Righteous Brothers from 1965 IMO

time for another song from my list of "20 of the best songs of all time"
"HELP ME MAKE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT"
the first song in the list whose writer makes more than one appearance...
singer/songwriter Kris Kristofferson wrote this country love song...
the lyrics in this are well crafted, original yet sugary sweet at the same time...
you know a song is timeless and transcends all genres when the likes of Gladys Knight, Glenn Campbell, Mariah Carey, Engelbert, Elvis, Buble, Joan Baez and Rita Coolidge amongst a long list of other singers record great versions of it.
i have to say that of all the versions i have heard, and there are dozens of them that without prejudice or favour that Kristofferson's is still the best but Presley's is a close second.

^Now which of the others will it be I wonder?? And sung by whom? When I think of his songs, it's always "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down" that pops up first in my mind.

so i thought i would put you all out of your guessing of what Kristofferson penned song is also on my list...
MH, "loving her was easier" was close and almost made the list, as did "why me,Lord" but on this occasion Ruby's guess was correct:
"SUNDAY MORNING COMING DOWN"
was written in 1969 and released by Ray Stevens prior to Johnny Cash sending it into the stratosphere...
the reason this song makes the list is the mournful tune and lyrics that wallow in self pity after one hell of a saturday night of indulgences.
Kristofferson paints a fantastic image of waking up with a hangover, putting on whatever clothes the character could muster to put on and then he describes the images and smells of the street as he ventures outside, fantastic stuff and no one sings this one with the solomn and dour vocal delivery that it deserves more than Johnny Cash.
