48. "Lisa se Klavier" - Koos Kombuis, Elke Boemelaar se Droom

A fairly simple, popular ballad by one of our 'alternative' local musos, and one of his more conservative offerings.
Rough translation below - the original Afrikaans is much more poetic ...

Ek het ‘n vriendin
Vêr by die blou see
Teen die hang van Tafelberg
As die son sak
Speel sy die mooiste melodieë

I have a friend
There, near the blue sea
In the lee of Table Mountain
As the sun sinks
She plays the prettiest melodies

Haar vingers ken die pad
Opgesluit
In wit en swart
Die klavier se grootste vreugde
Hartseer en verlange
Verstaan die hart se diepste smart

Her fingers know the way
Locked up
In white and black
The piano’s greatest delight
Heartache and longing
Comprehending the heart’s deepest anguish

Chorus: x 2
Ja, die hele wêreld word stil
En luister in die donker uur
Na die naggeluide
Van Lisa se klavier

Yes, the whole world becomes quiet
And listens, in the dark hours
To the night sounds
Of Lisa’s piano

Lisa kan nie ophou
As sy eers begin het nie
Sy laat my nooit huis toe loop
Of afskeid neem
Voor my laaste sigaret nie

Lisa cannot stop
Once she has begun
She doesn’t let me go home
Or take my leave
Before my cigarettes are finished

Ek staan op haar balkon
Ek drink haar appelkoostee
Ek kyk na Kaapstad
In die nag
Die liggies
En die swart, swart see

I stand on her balcony
And drink her apricot tea
And look at Cape Town
In the night
The lights
And the black, black sea

Chorus: x2

En onder op die sypaadjie
Sien ek die bergie en sy maat
Gaan staan en opkyk
Vêr na bo
Vanuit die vullis van Oranjestraat

And down on the pavement
I see a homeless person (bergie is a colloquialism referring specifically to street people living ‘in the shadow of Table Mountain’) and his friend
Go and stand looking up
Way above
Out of the litter on Orange Street

Hulle ken al lank die klanke
Wat uit haar woonstel stroom
Lank na twaalf met die deure oop
Al moan die bure ook al hoe
Word Lisa elke boemelaar se droom

They know well, and have done for a long time, the sounds
That stream from her apartment
Long after midnight, with the doors open
Although the neighbours complain like crazy
Lisa becomes every hobo’s dream

Chorus: x2

.... and

50. "The Turning Year" - Roger Eno, The Turning Year - just love this little piece - all about the feels ... I've listened to it umpteen times and it never fails to delight ...

Phew! I could go on and on, and on, but again - it's so interesting when you start narrowing choices down and really listening properly - some I thought would be in this collection are not, and then there is so very much music tucked away in ones psyche, that more and more floats to the surface as you go along! I'm sure I'll be kicking myself somewhere along the line too - for having left something out! Oh well ... that's it for now.

We have a lot of tracks in common. And a couple in this list I have never heard of. Must get around to that sometime. Good selection Ruby!
