UK TOP 100 SUMMARY & REVIEW 09.02.25 #20

THE TOP TEN:

Thanks to the Super Bowl, Kendrick and SZA climb hugely to 10 with 'Luther,' and with the help of the Grammys, Doechii is up to 9 with 'Denial Is A River.' ROSÉ and Bruno finally take a hit as 'APT.' slides to 8. Alex Warren is this week's highest new entry with 'Ordinary' at 7, as Benson Boone has the highest climb from the recent award shows as 'Beautiful Things' is up mammoth numbers. Chrystals 'The Days' has a more notable sales drop as they fall to 5 as Chappell Roan takes that opportunity to ramp 'Pink Pony Club' up to 4, and Lady Gaga's 'Abracadabra' almost doubles in sales as it's up from 6 to 3. Kendrick Lamar's 'Not Like Us' reaches a new peak at two from the Super Bowl, and holding the number one despite facing a brutal 5,000 drop in sales and a drop in downloads and streaming is 'Messy' by Lola Young, giving her a 4th consecutive week at the peak.

NEW ENTRY:

99. Mutt—Leon Thomas (6/10)

It reminds me of Tommy Richman, but without the voice changer or horrid vocals. This had the R&B essence and just had something really real about it. It's also the first time I've heard of Leon, so hopefully this is a good start for his career. It doesn't sound like a radio hit, so I expect it to not get too far, though.

91. Now It's Gone—Parallel (4/10)

This is the type of song that you'll find in a Spotify playlist with 23 saves titled "club mix: Ibiza 24hr DJ music #ibiza #fun," and when you see that, you know you are going to hear anything but fun; it's the same chopped-up DJ sounds that nobody really likes apart from the bin workers on a Friday, in other words, lazy and minimum effort.

89. Love Me Not—Ravyn Lenae (5/10)

I feel much more could've been done with this, but it keeps the fun, the pace, and the flow all at the minimum. More needs to be done to this because right now it sounds like a pop song on an album that everybody forgets about, and the vocals really don't help shape a better song either; they're boring.

74. Open Arms—SZA/Travis Scott (4.4/10)

The song starts with SZA's clear, angelic voice, one of the most beautiful things ever. She goes on to create a raw and real atmosphere that feels connected, "This is going to be an 8/10," I think to myself… until Travis Scott comes in and raps completely unrelated in his autotuned, fried vocals about how he's got opps and he's having sex… And to make matters worse, some weird-ass moment pops up at the last 30 seconds of the song that sounds kerfuffled and nothing like the song. How can you even fumble that bad? This makes me so angry how it got worse every second.

61. Twenties—Giveon (7.4/10)

It sounds as if SZA was a male artist. I first heard of Giveon when he collaborated with Teddy Swims on 'Are You Even Real.' It turns out he has many views before this, though, with his most popular YouTube video amassing 437M views at the time of writing, and this sounds promising for anyone who came for the realness felt by him on the Teddy Swims collab; the heartbreak is expressed well and feels correctly approached. Keep up the good work!

56. Tell me—Sonny Fedora/Clementine Douglas (5.3/10)

Previous listen:

Bad? No, it's just extremely basic, like most things coming from Sonny and Clementine.

Added:

On the second listen, it is still basic; it doesn't mean there won't be good vocals and a huge weakness, but even if there isn't, it just isn't different. Sonny Fedora sadly tends to be one artist who lacks in making unique music.

53. Baby (Is it a crime) - Rema (3.8/10)

Oh hell naw!! Did he make this on the free version of BandLab?? What's up with this guy's quality lately? Everything sounds like he was using an online keyboard, and just every other aspect of this is something we all know about Rema. In other words, this is Afrobeat music from Temu. Uninspired, dreary, and garbage.

13. Born Again—LISA/Doja Cat/RAYE (6/10)

Tell me why the same women who dressed up as Satan and made a whole era demonic are on a song with LISA and RAYE telling you to pray to Jesus?? This must be a joke. I suppose this'll feature on LISA'S upcoming album, and thankfully, because it's the first good single from her I've heard and Doja and RAYE both had better parts, it's giving a more 2000s to 2010s pop twist, and the rapping is giving a modern era mix. This doesn't explore new boundaries too much, but it's definitely a good step to stretch out in music while keeping their original fanbase.

7. Ordinary—Alex Warren (4/10)

Not only is this the same thing Alex has been creating over and over, but it's also super dull. I just don't get how you can make something this lacking in originality… His ideas are running out as an artist, and this shows. I'm hugely disappointed.
