To me raves gained it's name in the late 80's and early 90's.

Has anyone here actually been to a proper rave, legal or not?

A rave is by definition illegal.

No I have not been to one. For one, their heyday was in the late 80's as you said and I was not yet ten years of age. And two, there were not a lot of them in the States outside a few pocket scenes in places like Florida, New York, and LA.
