Best (non musical) Film Soundtrack
#1
Difficult to say, really, because there are so many good ones out there.

But I'd say that Ennio Morricone's The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is a contender.

The thing about film music is that, whatever your taste, you'll find something you like i.e. film scores are written for the film and therefore may be classical, country, rock, big band, electronic or whatever.

I've got The Lost Boys and it's a good one. It's also an example of the use of pre-exisitng music in a film.

Sometimes there is friction between film composters and music editors on films. Studios have long known that a hit song can feed back into box office receipts. Now that many studios are part of companies which include record labels, they can also make money off soundtrack sales. So the incentive to include songs - whether original or pre-existing - can affect the artisitc decision making process.

Ennio Morricone is the GOD of filmmusic.
And the soundstrack to The Good ,the bad and the ugly...is a classic.
However i think its not his absolute best.
The themes from
The Mission http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ixby9BzJf...re=related
For a fistful of dollars http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILB0yIn6jBg
For a few dollars more http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uq2l20k_0...re=related
and perhaps Cinema Paradiso are all among my favorites. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwDf2DCX_1A

Be aware for some really moving tunes...Wink

For me, Hans Zimmer & James Newton Howard's The Dark Knight was fantastic and really captured the movie perfectly. Even though the cast was great and the story was superb, the score added so much.

Another favourite of mine is John William's work on Home Alone 1 and 2. They're really special films to me because I use to (and still do!) love them as a kid, and the genres are quite diverse throughout. Plus, 'Mom Returns And Finale' is one of my favourite pieces of music and it's a deeply personal piece of music to me.

Morricone's The Mission is so beautiful. I've never seen the film, but the score just sounds perfect. I believe he was quite upset that it didn't win the Oscar that year.

I've got some Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard cues on compilation CDs. I've noticed, though, that on compilation CDs the same cues appear time and time again. I can understand why record labels do this they're playing safe - but I don't think it does composers or CD buyers justice.

John Williams is amazing. I was watching Saving Private Ryan last night and his music was so beautiful. But at the risk of sounding like I'm stuck in the 70s, can I just mention Throne Room/End Title from Star Wars? It just sends shivers up my spine whenever I hear it.

Finally, here's a question: do you think it's possible to dislike a film but enjoy the music? Mackenna's Gold was pretty lame as a film, but Quincy Jones' score was excellent.

Any of the Morricone's movies are good..

Gladiator
Star Wars
American Beauty
Ben Hur
Passion Of Christ

Anything by Danny Elfman, especially for the Tim Burton movies.

The first Batman with Michael Keaton, Elfman's score for that was amazing.

djdave - For me, the films I'm drawn to are half the good soundtrack, and secondly, the story itself. As of yet, I haven't come across a film where I disliked the film, but loved the soundtrack. Maybe one day.

Actually I like the music from Braveheart. Brilliant hardcore remix out there.
