Simon Cowell is he respected in music or not??
#1
Just wondering what peoples' views on Simon Cowell's influence in music is ?? He is apparently due to be knighted for his contributions to music, but to me, he has helped ruin the charts with his 'muppet, manufactured tasteless trash'. He has harboured talents that want to get their 5mins of fame and not necessarily strive to be creative and write from the heart. To me, music should be written and sung by the performer - although of course not discrediting talents like Elvis Presley or Eva Cassidy - as it is about their own personal stories, feelings and emotions. I also love trying to discover more experimental artists, whereas Cowell's music is all 'middle of the road'. I just can't imagine anything of Cowell's popping up in the Mojo Magazine - a magazine I respect. What do others think???

I love him, only because everyone hates him.
That 'muppet, manufactured tasteless trash', would do fine without Simon's help

Yes hate to call it 'muppet, manufactured tasteless trash' but it's just music that has no feel for me. I love the influential artists like Dylan, Hendrix, Miles Davis, Velvet Underground, The Clash plus a lot of more underground artists like David Sylvian etc. and just don't see Cowell's music as relating anything to this. I just don't consider it talented music - but that is not detracting from the artists - who all have great voices - but just not my thing.

Totally agree with you there.
Just think Simon gets a bad rap for doing what he does, promoting tasteless music.
Hell, somebody's gotta do it. lol

I actually like Simon because on American Idol, he says what he thinks.
Some people just can't deal with that.
How dare him.

Yep I know where you're coming from now. He is actually quite funny, but the music he produces isn't to my tastes.

i think i'd have more respect for him if used his time to go to pubs/clubs and sign up 'real' bands....ones who are doing the hard yards trying to pay their dues and not just wannabes who think they can sing because they sound good in the shower!

The shows are a bit depressing musically but they're really just light entertainment and hugely successful at that. Not everyone sees musical integrity as important so good luck to him.

Not that many winners are successful in the long term so there's plenty of room for 'legitimate' artists.

- but in saying all that I don't like the smug git one bit

I see him as the absolute pinnacle of cynical commoditisation of music. To him, music is a vehicle to make money, and has little relation to art. That's unfortunate, and he's really an irrelevance to me.

Has nothing whatever to do with music IMHO.

Good in the shower! You should hear me in the garage. The whole neighbourhood is screaming and shouting. Maybe I should get an agent!
