You could say I'm past caring who's making the music, or what tabloid fodder they're up to. I find it more exciting to be largely not knowing what I'm listening to. The only reason I ever look nowadays is if I like a track well enough to want it on my portable.

I'm also past caring about things like why Neil Young won't reissue Time Fades Away, or what someone's favourite Jimi Hendrix song is. The adventure of hearing it the first time is most likely to carry the weight for me, not the repeated listenings. For me it's far more interesting to enjoy music happening in the moment than listening to a captured moment.

But 'captured' music is just music that was recorded when it was 'happening in the moment'. Music is music. It's irrelevant when it was made or by whom. Just enjoy it in whatever form/time it arrives.

For me time = distance. It's very relevant to me when something was made simply to be able to relate to it. If it's in my living memory, great. If not it may as well be on another planet.

Does that mean that all classical music is off limits for you simply because it was made hundreds of years ago? Incidentally very much 'happening' music since it could not be recorded at the time. Or does it mean only music you have heard/experienced in your life time. If that's the case you are closing yourself off to a hell of a lot of material.

No one said it were off-limits or that I were closing myself off to anything.

If I go to a chamber or orchestra concert to hear that sort of music, those musicians are interpreting that written recipe for me live in real time, and I am at the moment of creation.

If I listen to a dance music programme on the radio I'm as close the DJ's point of creation as I can get. It may have been pre-recorded but everyone is hearing it live in real time with me.

But something like say, Jimi Hendrix -- I'm very aware that I'm experiencing an aural equivalent of a photograph. I will never be able to experience that music's moment of creation as it went down. I find that familiarity lessens a piece of music's impact greatly.

We obviously see things from a different perspective - so be it. You have an interesting point of view on this. First time I have heard someone say familiarity lessen's a piece of music's impact. Anyway it's food for thought. Try this
