DAVID BOWIE "the next day"
admittedly, i am not a huge Bowie fan but i do own several albums plus
a couple of best of sets...love the man's singles, bit 'iffy' as an album
artist IMO. i am always intrigued to hear new Bowie material because he is a
thinker, is experimental and sometimes a 'bit out there', but this time around
after a decade break i just find it to be rehashing the past, can definately hear
bits of 'life on mars' here and his 1970s glam rock material, seventeen tracks
on this one...way too long IMO, and only liking six of the tracks with nothing
standing out as anything like a real classic Bowie song, and certainly not
anything that i think would grow on me enough to ever get this one.
im sure diehard Bowie fans would relish the thought of a new album and will
without a doubt purchase it(as i would and do my favourite artists), but unfortunately
for me, the guy should have stayed retired(or reclusive) and left us to our
old best of albums of decades hidden in the midsts of time and space!
rating: 1.4

i agree with the cover work Jerome...its basically his old "heroes" cover covered with a white square...real thoughtful stuff(as you said) for a man of his reputation

On a quick search of the MD posts this is the first discussion of one of his album covers other than to mention he has an album (mostly in the album/artist thread).
Seems Mr. Bowie has figured out how to get his name and work discussed again. I'm pretty sure he doesn't need more money, so to produce an album now is likely more to build on his body of work than to win over new fans or keep old fans.
Never an uninteresting moment in the Bowie career, he's got my interest.
The measure of music is the reaction it can create. Good music will stand the test of time and I think Bowie's catalogue (warts and all) will be something people will look into for many years to come. I will be getting his new album on Tuesday, as that is when it is released in N. America.

good comments Evil....
i think you are spot on with the "Seems Mr. Bowie has figured out how to get his name and work discussed again." comments mate
and im sure the new one will probably put other albums(probably ziggy) back in the lower reaches of the charts once again...over the next couple of months he will undoubtably sell more of his back catalogue than he probably has done in any given couple of months over the past decade...cudos to Bowie and all other old rockers who do that, and why not, thats their job afterall!

Hi everyone,
I think this is an exceptional album and easily the best rock album of the year.
The cover is genius - pointing to the self-referencing nature of the work therein (it's heavily informed by Bowie's earlier stuff) whilst nodding to the fact that it is looking to the future. Sure, only Bowie could get away with it but hey, it's BOWIE!!!

i agree Jerome...for a guy that has always prided himself on "invention" both as a performer/artist, and also for intenting 'persona's'...he sure went backwards with this one IMO also.
but i can totally see where morrissey is coming from with his comments also...maybe he is saying "forget the old bowie, this is me,right here, right now" by using the cover the way he has?

Oviously not period- because I like the cover.
Perhaps you just don't understand what I means ;-)
