Eusexia - FKA Twigs - Mellope Album Review

OVERVIEW:

What a weird and wonderful album... well, some of it. Some parts felt like they took effort to make but just couldn't show that in the final projects, while others took you on such a journey that you were rolling on the floor crazy just like FKA. Whether or not this is good for you comes down to your own taste—some parts felt complex to digest and hard to get, while others were just fun experimental bops that mark a new sound in music. I think Twigs did good here, though. Without a doubt, she had a wide range of songs here and something for a range of moods. Good album, but FKA does not need to be acting like a caveman for the album rollout ?.

TRACK BY TRACK REVIEW:

1. Eusexia (5/10)
This steps outside the bounds of discovery—everything about this is never heard before. FKA's freaky aaah cover and the music video, which featured multiple men in pants crawling along the floor like they were having a seizure before flipping in the air at random times, one guy spotted multiple times in the music video was flipping around and racing around the set like a monkey—I don't know who the hll came up with these ideas! Despite everyone in the music video looking like they're on drgs, I'm actually going to describe the music. FKA's singing was really angelic and on point, but the most memorable moment for me was when I saw five men in the music video move their heads like grasshoppers who just saw their prey before touching each other like they just discovered other human life forms. It really was a sight to see, FKA, it really was. The problem for me is this sets as a thought-out track with lyrical substance, but despite that, it’s not memorable (unless you've watched the music video). It tries to get you into a trance-like state, but I don't think the actual music is at the realm of understanding—it feels too complicated and easily memed on. I feel like a small electronic fizzle would work into the background and a more elegant environment for a track like this. Seriously though, if you wanna do you, Twigs, then I'm all for it. At least the music video was kinda funny.

2. Girl Feels Good (8.5/10)
Woah, this has so much to unpack! Not only does this sound more radio-friendly, it's also really experimental, and if both merge, then we could be in for a new era of music! My favorite part was at 1:42 when a mysterious haunting noise came in, which reminded me of a movie scene where you're cutting from one scene to the next into a quieter atmosphere. If that lasted slightly longer, then I would've been more happy, but this is still a sound that I hope will be called iconic one day in the future ❤️. I also LOVE how this track represents being free and gives a stress-free enjoyment of a song!

3. Perfect Stranger (5/10)
I would like to appreciate how much timing and cut scenes went into this music video to make it what it is. As for the song, it works for FKA and doesn't have any huge problems in its structure, but for me, there could've been more than this.

4. Drums of Death (4.5/10)
This is a very experimental sound that uses electronic and industrial with art-pop. The problem for me is it's very glitchy and sounds clunky. As much as FKA is most likely trying for a new sound to see where it goes, I think this is too cramped into one and isn't going in the right direction.

5. Room of Fools (7/10)
Every part feels approached with care and super unique from the rest, and the album continues this motion of being yourself no matter what others think, and this does that well. It’s super cool because you don't ever see things like this. That's a 7 from me.

6. Sticky (8/10)
First off, I don't know if this is true, but the Genius bio claims that when she talks about sticky situations in the song, she's talking about in-bed sticky situations... if you know what I mean ??. Yeah... pretty wild! The song is up to scratch just like the rest. It purposely created a glitchy sound that keeps the base of the song constantly transforming, which I think is brilliant! You enter so many different states in so many short periods of time, and it's all just gripping. It's hard to comprehend how thought out this was! You must take a listen!

7. Keep It, Hold It (6/10)
Mixing trance with avant-garde and feeling relaxing to listen to, but it just doesn't give you a feeling to hold onto—too weak. What we do have to talk about, though, is the pose on the YouTube cover of this song... what even was that? She looks like a constipated grasshopper squatting to poo. Y'all gotta see this—how does someone even go ahead and make this a cover ??.

8. Childlike Things ft. North West (7/10)
'Childlike Things' is a pushed single off FKA's album Eusexia, which features Christian praise lyrics from 11-year-old North West, and this is the first good thing from North! It's not something you would expect someone that age to understand, yet the single sounds complicated but artistic.

9. Striptease (8/10)
An experimental masterpiece, combining drum and bass and glitch electronic to give us a heavenly song. It gives a surreal surrounding vibe, and the components are wonderful! One sounds like a heartbeat measurement, and the beep throughout the hook is just the crème de la crème!

10. 24hr Dog (7/10)
This is a heartbreaking song that speaks about being a "dog" for your partner, letting them use you. I find it strange the way FKA doesn't use a sad beat for sad songs or an angry beat for angry songs—instead, she goes full experimental. I respect her decision, but I really don't think this matches up and makes the emotions less formed with the track and more formed with your own mind.

11.  Wanderlust (6/10)
This felt more gentle and more normal pop. She managed to leave out the NPC energy but didn’t eat—in fact, she left crumbs. As much as it's not for me, I respect that this was still quality and highly resonates with people. So in some ways, Twigs slayed.

BEST: Girl Feels Good
WORST: Drums of Death
RATING: 6.5/10
