I have sparse knowledge of contemporary genres in pop, dance, hip hop, country, classical and folk but I am trying to keep up. I am currently interested in British folk music.
I appreciate all genres of music so I am always interested in new sounds. It becomes overwhelming at times however since I don't just focus in on one artist or genre,,,I'm all over the place except for the genres mentioned previously.

It's a mixed up sensation this being alive
Oh! it wears a man down into the ground
It's the strangest elation
I can't describe it
Oh it leaves a man weary
It makes a man frown..............................Chris Simpson ( "Mixed Up Sensations" 1975 Martin's Cafe )

Classical for me
Love it, yet seldom listen to it.
Why? it's so hard to sing along with.

I'm exploring Hip Hop currently.
I have a few discs; Some Eminem, De la Soul, Dr Dre, but need to dig a bit deeper.
There'll still be a fair bit I don't warm to, but there is some good stuff out there.

Ibrahim,
What other jazz artists do you listen to ? Check out some contemporary jazz Toshiko Akiyoshi & Lew Tabackin Orchestra !!!,Anthony Braxton, Jan Garbarek, Charles Lloyd, AEC, Tomasz Stanko,Chic Corea, Jon Hassel, Keith Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette, Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Egberto Gismonti, Meredith Monk, Jon Balke, Michael Formanek and Carla Bley & Orchestra...... for starters...if you want more I can suggest more but start with these for now.
You may find something interesting there. This is jazz from the mid seventies to the present day.

Here it is complete--set aside 40 minutes and convince yourself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFA0FYQo0Gg << On everybody's Top 10 list of albums to get folks to know what jazz is about--without being in the least stuffy or anal-retentive, it contains well-integrated elements of every style of jazz since the '20's, frequently in the same song. Charles Mingus deserves his place in the Pantheon for this, if nothing else (and, natch, there was plenty, plenty else).
