Andy Jackson, Floyd's esteemed sound engineer and the brains behind the perfectly mixed 'The Division Bell' did a small bit for me on one of my tracks this morning. He also has his own band called The Eden House. Have a feeling Steve might like this.

I have never had any of my homegrown tracks 'mastered' before. I have tried many mix engineers but they never quite came up with the goods (or at least what I expected it to be). That could be because of a basic deficiency in the source material (which I suspect is the case) or because they hear it a different way to the way I want it to sound. It's very easy to criticise, but everyone hears a piece of music in their own way. So I 'mixed' (and I use this term very loosely) my own tracks until I thought they might be ready for someone to master (by the way I have only done one to date - the one on the 'home' page). So I approached Andy after looking at Floyd's various sites and tribute sites. He runs a company called Tube Mastering and although he does not say much, what he does say makes sense. He is extremely affordable and professional in his conduct. Look, the guy is a wizard. He knows what to do. It's that simple. I have also used a bass player, incidentally on the same track, Dave Sturt, who is recommended by him. Andy can probably pick a thousand holes in what I have done to date but that's OK. That's how you learn. It's just a fascinating journey......Sales potential - zero. But it's a hell of a lot of fun doing it.

Very cool, Jerome! I wish I had the ambition and talent to make my own music. Pretty neat that Andy is so approachable.
I labelled your music as ambient ...what would you say it is?
That reminds me of an interesting little tidbit that I experienced a couple of days ago. Sometimes I volunteer at our local community centre and while I was there this young looking 39 year old was gently playing Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata! Being the music nut I am I rushed over and sat closer to watch and hear him. After he finished the piece he said he was self taught on piano and guitar. His favorite group is Pink Floyd by the way. We talked music for several minutes and then he played another instrumental piano piece that he wrote. It was very good and I asked him what did you call it and he just smiled and shrugged his shoulders...no title ..I just wrote it for my five year old son who is learning piano and guitar from me. I thought it was a beautiful story from Vincent! I hope I meet him again soon.

That actually reminds me of TWO stories. I was in a place called Ravello, on the Italian Amalfi Coast some time ago. There was a guy playing what looked like a pinball machine with strings. A kind of dulcimer. Absolutely fascinating to watch. And I met the guy with the wine glasses who played with David Gilmour in Venice - just after he recorded 'On An Island'. This guy was playing complete classical pieces on wine glasses! Unbelieveable what humans are capable of.
And by the way I could not even begin to tell you what 'genre' my music slots into. It's just a combination of sounds I have been influenced by over the years. A lot of people say it is relaxing and peaceful - maybe quietish - I don't think it's that at all - in fact some of it is quite bombastic - it's funny how different people hear different things in what you do. People tend to be selective when they hear something - they pick out the bits that appeal to them and then apply that same description to the whole work. ??!!?? Could also be because I mixed it with a relatively low overall volume -to preserve the dynamics. After Andy did his bit the piece jumped out (on headphones anyway) so now it is perceived as being louder (without being squashed or over-compressed) due to his wizardry. The change is subtle but noticeable.
Funny that the guy's name is Vincent. That happens to be my favourite track of all time. Used to play it for years in pubs. Fantastic lyrics. Another one is Toni Child's 'Heaven's Gate'. Awesome piece of writing.

Listen to how her voice changes when she moves from soft to loud - it's like two different singers in one body. Love this track,

By the way here's another favourite - Natali Drosou - try the 'Journey' track. If Natali had a buck for everytime I have played this she would be one wealthy lady indeed. This is just plain mesmerising. Minimalist beauty.

Seeing as I only bugger around with it from time to time I reckon I should call it 'The Tinker Belle'
