When seeing musicals, I look at many aspects, but I like many of them. I noticed some of the ones I like are VERY underrated. Here are my top five most underrated musicals.
5. [Title of the Show]
[Title of the Show] (yes. the brackets are part of the official title) is a musical about writing a musical. Not like the Producers. This one actually is entirely about writing it.Also, the musical they are writing is about writing a musical. It's an endless spiral. This show is actually a one act musical. It only got number five because the writing in it isn't the best. The thing about this show is that the only instrument in the pit is a piano because the show is about writing a show, so you'd just have a piano. My favorite number from this show is called "secondary characters" where they talk about the secondary characters. You can't really describe it that well because that's basically all the song is about. Nothing more: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6MLYS7kKmk
4. Urinetown
Urinetown is a musical with a crummy title, however it is a great show. Sure, it got awards, but nobody really talks about it. It is one of those musicals that just disappeared after time. It is a musical about a city with a drought. The citizens have to use public bathrooms. Personal bathrooms are unheard of anymore. The need to pay as well. Then, they rebel. I won't dare give away the ending because it is great. The show even likes to make fun of its title and subject mater on how it's disgusting. My favorite number is "it's a privilege to Pee." It is a number where it is explained that they can never get in the bathroom for free because of the drought: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hmHekGAO080
3. Shrek: The Musical
People always bash Shrek because they think that the movies were enough. Nobody gives Shrek a chance because they just think it's stupid. It is just not fair to do that, though. It is a rather dazzling show that is hysterical with excellent music. I have already mentioned this one and showed my favorite in my top ten favorite musicals of all time list, so I will show another number. Another number I like is called "What's Up, Duloc?". It is where Lord Farquaad shows how "perfect" his world is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zohx1G12oLw
2.1776: the Musical
What could be better than a musical about our founding fathers signing the declaration of independence? 1776 is a fun musical that shows the personalities of the founding fathers as more of big kids, but in a good way. It isn't insulting. It is just really fun to see. The shows tunes are very nice and I enjoy it immensely. My favorite number is called "But, Mr. Adams." I only have the film version. That's the only one I can find. It is a number where John Adams is looking to see who will write the constitution. He asks all of his buddies, but they all refuse until he finally resides on Thomas Jefferson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQbYgLae1u0
1. The Drowsy Chaperone
I am in a production of this one. I put it as my third favorite musical of all time on my top ten list of all time favorite musicals. This show is all creative. It is an excellent show, and it got many awards when it came out. The only problem is that it also got forgotten. I love this show so much and it deserves to be known. Since my favorite number is shown in my top ten favorite musicals of all time list, I will show my second favorite. It is called "I Am Aldolpho." It is a number where Aldolpho, a latin lover, is trying to have a woman remember his name because, and I quote from what he said, "When you are making love to me and you are screaming, you must say the right name or it will spoil everything." He eventually has her remember because she is desperate to get to make love to him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DohTfazLtJY
