i dont think John was a 'superior' writer to Paul as their styles were different, IMO John was able to put his feelings into his songs and Paul couldnt, whereas Paul was a master of writing catchy "pop" songs.
i also think "band on the run" was quite simplistic lyrically, IMO people just took notice of it because it was his first solo album to sound like a real rockband.

i partly agree with your comments that Paul doesnt know when to "shelve" some material...i did read somewhere once that people who work with him just agree with him because he is "paul the ex-beatle"????

And an absolute perfectionist and control freak at times also which can be a pain in the butt sometimes if you're working with him, so I've heard or read somewhere. He has been accredited with getting Abbey Road and Let It Be together so that they saw the light of day.

It should be noted that Paul is still writing classical scores and to some descent reviews by the critics. He has a knack for the unforgettable melody and that translates to pop music...a few exceptions ...Helter Skelter....actually maybe the only exception ?

John was identified with the edgier, harder and heavier sounding music with a deeper meaning and admitted to using nonsensical lyrics (I am the Walrus) like Bob Dylan did at times although I myself and I cannot understand a lot of his(Dylan)songs but that's what makes him a genius. John delved into the avant garde and experimental side of things from time to time. He mellowed out imo after the Pastic Ono Band album to a certain extent influenced by Yoko ...love ballads. The difference between Paul and John ..basically the same idea by Crazy-Horse....John - "meaning" songs and Paul "pop" songs.
Saying who is better at this stage of the game is absurd. I know we are not doing that as this small group of music lovers wouldn't stoop that low. That's what turned me off of other music discussion groups ! Kinks are better than Beatles, Beatles better than Stones, Pink Floyd better than Beatles, etc...garbage babble....does nothing for someone who is serious about music and wants to rediscover or discover new or old artists.

Sometimes I want to listen to Lennon and he pleases me and sometimes I want to listen to McCartney and he pleases me. Sometimes I listen to The Beatles and they always please and astonish me !!!!

All in all along with Dylan, Paul and John are two of our greatest songwriters of our time !!!! Hey that would make a good thread!
