What Are You Listening To?

ACE OF BASE "the sign (happy nation - us version)" cd, 1993

career stats:
studio albums.............5
singles......................26

this album.....................#9 AU...#1 US...#1 CAN....#1 UK
singles:
"all that she wants"........#1 AU....#2 US...#1 CAN....#1 UK
"wheel of fortune"................................................#2 0 UK
"happy nation".............#80 AU.............................#40 UK
"waiting for magic"......................NCE.............................
"the sign".....................#1 AU.....#1 US...#1 CAN....#2 UK
"don't turn around"......#19 AU.....#4 US...#1 CAN....#5 UK
"living in danger".......#103 AU...#20 US...#7 CAN...#18 UK

second album from this Swedish pop group...
first in the US/UK/CAN/AU though...
album contains tracks from the band's debut Swedish set "happy nation", plus a couple not
on that album and a couple they re-recorded again...
happy, easy going pop tunes that have a hint of reggae through them at times...
album contains a respectable cover of Aswad's "don't turn around" which in return was a cover of the Luther Ingram
song, which again, in return was a cover of a Tina Turner that was written for her ny the legendary Albert Hammond.
(phew, glad I got that one out without getting confused), ive got the Aswad, love it, heard and like the Tina, but not heard
the Luther...
after ABBA and Roxette, Ace Of Base are the biggest selling Swedish band of all time clocking up 30+ million album sales
still a pretty good album IMO...

I cant be bothered listing all the tracks from this one, just going to say, of the eleven track on it, theres three I love, seven I like
and one I dislike, that would give an overall rating of 2.2, which is respectable "high-like"...

my favourite track:

KIMBRA "vows" cd, 2011

career stats:
studio albums...........2
singles....................10

this album....................#1 NZ...#4 AU...#14 US...#24 CAN
singles:
"settle down"................#37 NZ
"cameo lover"...............NCA
"good intent"............................#98 AU
"warrior"......................#22 NZ
"two way street"............NCA
"come into my head"......NCA

New Zealand vocalist Kimbra's debut set....
bought this one on the back of the superb Gotye single "somebody that I used to know"
on which she supplied vocals....
this one, the album. is a bit of a disappointment IMO...
songs are pretty bland overall....
would love to hear Kimbra do a jazz/blues album as I feel her voice would suit that style more...
there a re a couple of jazzy type tunes on this one and theyre not too bad...
so, seven I like, four I dislike, gives an overall score of 1.6 which means I don't like it overall.

best track for me:

SARAH BLASKO "eternal return" cd, 2015:

Aussie songstress...
fifth album...
bought this one in a discount bin...
liked a few of her singles over the years so I thought $3 was a good buy...
it wasn't, dislike most of the album, but like the three singles lifted off it...
shame really, because I like her voice...
my fave was the third single off it, a nice ballad...

MENTAL AS ANYTHING "fundamental" cd, 1985

Aussie alternative band, turned full on pop for this album...
double platinum here, their biggest seller, reached #3 in Oz...
four singles off it, the biggest was "live it up", which when featured in
the hit movie Crocodile Dundee became a huge worldwide hit, their only
international hit, but they deserved more than that one IMO...
like their other albums, pretty good...

SHAWN MENDES "illuminate" cd, 2016:

second album from this Canadian pop singer...
not pop as you'd call modern pop, slightly bluesy and R+B,
mainly slower tunes in the vein of Ed Sheeran, even sounds like Ed in places...
album hit the top3 in the four charts that count, not surprising was #1 in his homeland...
two singles lifted from it, "mercy" and "treat you better", both sum up the album pretty well...
I like the album, would probably score around 2.0 if I scored it...
fave track wasn't released as a single, here it is:

Tribute to my best friend and "sister" Thelma who passed away today :frown:
I'm going to miss all our phone calls. Got no one to talk to anymore :frown:

Whose gonna be my best friend now, is what I wanna know.
We had 40+ whole years behind us. That's a long time to love somebody.

^Sorry for your loss Linda.

Thank Ruby!
It is hard. Times like this I hope ghosts do exist cause I would sure like to talk to my friend.
Only comfort I have is when things like this happens I'm not afraid of dying. I want to see them again.
I tend to think maybe our loved ones guide us to the other side.
Don't know what y'all think about that but I hope it is true.
