Oasis vs Nirvana

Which 90s band has stood the test of time better? These two were arguably the 2 biggest bands of the 90s. Personally, I think even some Oasis albums that were panned back then (Be Here Now), have now aged amazingly. Compare "All Around the World", "Stand By Me" and "Don't Go Away" with some of the garbage being released today.

Liked the first two Oasis albums, but they haven't impressed much since, although I probably haven't heard a lot of it.

Nevermind alone blows away anything Oasis released IMHO...

i am not really a fan of Nirvana or Grunge in general, but the fact that Cobain inspired a whole generation of kids and spawned a new genre of music they win hands down. Nirvana, singlehandedly put a boot up the backside of rock music in mush the same way as The Pistols did.
i often think what would Nirvana sound like now, had Cobain been alive today.
Oasis' first two albums were brilliant,classics in their own right, the next two album sucked big time(be here now/standing on the shoulders of giants), the ones after that were fairly good, but not outstanding...im looking foreward to Noel Gallaghers debut solo set.

Interesting thread here. I've never been a big fan of Nirvana and ironically they're pretty much the only grunge band I aint' really into.

Used to be a huge fan of Oasis when I was younger. Only Oasis album that I still like today is the first one 'Definitely Maybe', everything after that bores me really. What puts me off about Oasis is a) the attitudes (biggest band in world etc) and general ignorance of the Gallaghers & b) the fact they plaigarised an unbelievable amount of songs. I know they're not the only ones but they just took it to a whole new level IMO.

On the other hand I like some Nirvana tracks like 'About A Girl' and some stuff from the 'Nevermind' album. I guess they deserve some respect since they were part of the grunge movement which I'm a big fan of so I'll say Nirvana.

In my modest opinion, both bands are overrated. Nirvana I just do not like. I believe it the rebellious attitude which attracted and inspired generations. Musically they did not add anything new to what bands like Pearl Jam or Alice in Chains were already doing.
I believe that if Cobain would not have killed himself, they would probably not receive the acclaim they are receiving today. To call Cobain a genius is a bit too much to say the least.

And the reason why Oasis became as famous as they did was because of their attitude and the tantrums between Liam and Noel. The Oasis songs I do like were mostly sung by Noel (Masterplan, Half The World Away and Cast No Shadow). I agree with crazy horse that the first 2 albums were classics but the ones after that were rather uninspired.

I'm with you regarding Liam, but I've always thought Noel was quite a sharp character. Don't think he's a likeable specimen, but he's no fool.

i actually spoke to Noel two years ago, he toured here solo and acoustic...brilliant gig,the tour was a spur of the moment thing, he stayed in a backpackers motel,met him shopping in Perth,seemed like a down to earth sort of guy...
and you're correct Tiggi,he aint no fool,unlike that twat Liam who is a waste of space IMO

Noel Gallagher obviously isn't as thick as his brother Liam but he's still ignorant and disrespectful of other musicians in general IMO.

Not sure how you can say Nirvana when they had 3 albums?

Of course Oasis was good for about 3 albums.

Yet Nevermind was the best album of that year.

Now if you throw in Foo Fighters I'll have to go with that combo.

Noel, I'll give all respect to, but Liam no way. I've actually heard some downtempo experimental acoustic stuff from Noel as an act called 'Tetrahedran' ?? - will need to check wikipedia. However, both Oasis and Nirvana were very over-rated for me... the former being a throwback to a 60s sound whereas Nirvana, hmmm... well The Pixies and Sonic Youth were already streets ahead of anything they did. Although Nirvana unplugged is very good.. especially the cover version of The Vaselines' Plateau.
