TRACIE aka TRACIE YOUNG "far from the hurting kind" 1984. #64UK.
Tracie's only album, although she released a couple of stand alone singles prior to the albums release.
Tracie first appeared on vinyl as a sixteen year old as backing singer on The Jam's "bitterest pill" single in 1982, she then performed backing vocal duties on The Style Council's debut single "speak like a child" in 1983, at which time she was signed to Paul Weller's "respond records" label.
PW wrote most of the albums tracks and produced the album and for the most part the album is very TSC sounding. Elvis Costello wrote one song for the album, the first single, "(i love you)when you sleep".
the album is loaded with pop/soul music with some tracks very Motown sounding, Tracie has a pleasant enough voice for this material, unfortunately the album does sound very UK 1980s 'white boy/girl soul' which does let it down a couple of points in the rating, overall though, it is reasonably good.
the album was released on cd for the first time in mid 2010 and contains ten extra tracks including the non album singles, a couple of remixes and an acoustic track of her second single.
the album has Style Council written all over it,so if you dont like their work around 83-85 you probably wont like this album.
I LIKE THIS ALBUM

^^ I'm not a great fan of bonus tracks, so I'd probably say no. These ones answer some questions about the degree of MJ's input into the creative process, so I found them of interest. There are also some interview clips with Quincy, and with Rod Temperton (MJ song-writing contributor).
Not for me. Probably won't listen to them again, but if you like that sort of thing, you may feel otherwise.

PRINCE "PURPLE RAIN" 1984. #1 Aust/UK/US
what can i say about this one? its funk, its pop, its psuedo-psychadelia, its rock.....its Prince!
Prince has always reminded my of a 1980s Little Richard: flambouyant, extrovert, performer/entertainer,and like Little richard...he is truly unique and underrated/forgotten by the general public.
nine tracks of dance, ballads, rock and a seven and a half minute opus,in the title track. this was Prince at the start of international stardom at the top of his game. he was the only one who could match Michael Jackson for quality and class in the mid 1980s, this album is so good that any of the nine tracks could have been released as singles and been massive hits.

^ Great album Lloyd! Prince is one of the best artists of the 80s for me. Got the movie, but was disappointed. There's an album called 'The Gold Experience' from the 90s that is good as well!

Excellent Ferry song from mid 80s. This kind of music isn't usually my cup of tea but there's some kind of unique quality that Bryan Ferry's voice brings to it that sets it aside from other 80s pop.

This is the sort of stuff I despised as a teenager. However, as the years pile on it's time for a bit of a reassessment.
It's quite surprising to see just how many of the sibling's hits were covers, but that doesn't diminish the quality of the work. Richard's arrangements remind me somewhat of a slightly paler version of what Brian Wilson was doing with the Beach Boys, although the music is substantially different.
Karen's singing is gorgeous. [PC filter off] She had a great voice for a skinny bird [PC filter back on again]...
Allmusic 4/5 stars.
