I am not familiar with Cash's " concept " albums ??? Big news to me and probably millions of others. Also knew nothing of Peggy Lee's concept album either. Thanks for the news ... I'll check them out !!!!
I think the reason why Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was considered by many as the "first concept" album was because of the huge popularity of the Beatles that overrided mostly any other music
at the time !

"Pet Sounds" was a concept album that came around the same time as Pepper. I also think it's ALOT better of an album

Pet Sounds came out in 1966....is it a concept album???
all i know is that Macca was so impressed by the sounds that the Beach Boys got while recording the album that he wanted to at least equal it with the Beatles next one...which of course was Sgt.Peppers.
personally, i have Pet Sounds and apart from God Only Knows it is a very average collection of songs!

I also don't get " Pet Sounds " ! It was totally ignored by Rolling Stone Magazine polls 20 years ago and now it appears as number 2 behind Sgt.Pepper ...always number one.....what's up with that !!!! I only like their singles from it - God Only Knows, Sloop John B (cover song -great vocals), and Wouldn't It Be Nice. The instrumental on this album "Let's Go Away for Awhile" is not good...2 minutes and 18 seconds of mediocrity...title should be "Let's Go Away Forever" !!!....lol lol.
I don't even bother looking at RS mag polls anymore after they placed Elton John/Leon Russell - Reunion as number 3 for the Best of 2010 ???? Two great artists but they didn't do anything on the album in unison and the songs were ordinary...bland album IMHO !
And to try to set the record straight, Pet Sounds and Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band are pop albums that appeal to the majority of music listeners...avant garde, experimental, jazz, classical, black metal, etc..on and on will never appeal to a large portion of the music listening consumer ! I love all genres but when I want to talk about metal, say Opeth or Agalloch, the informed circle of people is a lot smaller than those that would want to talk about POP star Lady GaGa !
I do not understand how anyone who professes to like all music in general can criticize The Beatles without any concrete reasons !!!!!???????...however keeping in the spirit of this great MD , I will accept all opinions from all members and of course like any human being we will all agree to diagree ! I respect the opinions of others but when I vehemently disagree with something I'm gonna say so ! It's just when people make sweeping blatant statements without some sort of reason or justification..... it ticks me off !!!!! It's like saying - Classical Music sucks !!!! period.
I am not a fan of Metallica and they basically rule the metal music world like Gods ! I know there are countless others but Metallica seem to be the most popular...appealing to most metal fans ! However having said that I still acknowledge their contribution to music history and I don't say they're crap and leave it like that !
A Day in a Life still gives me shivers or goosebumps when I hear the opening acoustic guitar !!!!!

Yes they certainly equalled it with Sgt. Pepper ! There's a story to be told on the Compleat Beatles documentary I believe and I may be wrong regarding the source !!! Brian Wilson is very content and proud of Pet Sounds released in 1966 and when the Beatles come out with Sgt. Pepper in June, '67, all the Beach Boys are stunned especially Brian and they listen to the album virtually all day ! Brian is quoted as saying " we're nothing ! ".This is

I think both Pet Sounds, & Sgt Pepper are over-rated.
They both contain some good material, but both also contain some distinctly average songs. Not nearly strong enough to convince me that these two are amongst the best ever recorded.
Of course, it's all subjective...

(The British version of Rubber Soul was edited prior to its release in the U.S.A. to emphasise its folk rock feel that critics attributed to Bob Dylan and The Byrds.)
Wilson later recalled his first impressions of the groundbreaking album:

So in summation Woody Guthrie influenced Bob Dyan who influenced The Beatles who then wrote songs for Rubber Soul which impressed Brian Wilson who wrote Pet Sounds from which Paul was influenced by to write songs for Sgt. Pepper !!!...whew I'm done with this !
