SHAKIN' STEVENS "merry christmas everyone" cd, 2009.

yep, christmas is upon us so out comes the third christmas one this week...
big dissapointment this one, always liked/loved Shaky's albums as they are in a similar style to those of early rock 'n' roll...but this is simply aweful, far too many synths and electronic drum machines on these tracks, really thought he would have stayed faithful to the 1958 elvis christmas sounds...but its not to be.
these are not all new recordings, but rather a collection of tracks recorded over the last three and a half decades, some are originals, others are covers..
eight of the thirteen tracks are terrible, with only five scraping through with a "like" rating, including the 1980s UK #1 hit "merry christmas everyone",that one is probably the best of a bad bunch along with his cover of the Elvis hit "blue christmas"....
theres even one on here that is a blatant rip off of the old Buddy Holly song "(youre so square)baby,i dont care"...oh God, that one just makes me want to puke.

below are couple of links to my favourite tracks on this one.

MICHAEL JACKSON "michael" cd,2010.

some of these tracks were unfinished new songs at the time of his death, others were ones that were recorded for, but not released on previous album....which explains a lot IMO.
a bit of controversy surrounded this release as the Jackson clan claimed these were not MJ's vocals, EMI had them tested by voice analysists to prove that they were his vocals, the Jacksons still, to this day claim they are not!
either way...probably the worst official studio album by Jackson, several ok tracks, several bad ones also...nothing here to suggest that this man was the same man who released "off the wall", "thriller" and "bad".
album features guest appearances from Lenny Kravitz, Akon and 50 Cent, who incidently features on the album's best track "monster". theonlyother one worthy of really listening to is the album closer "too much too soon"...the rest, can pretty much forget them!
did this one as a new release back in 2010, and the rating stays pretty much the same...think i gave it the benefit of the doubt and it got 1.7 back then, it slips slightly this time round to a score of 1.6....

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM.

Kenny's third album as a solo act. A major success on the country charts at #2 and #39 pop, with two singles, the
title track was a #1 country and Sweet Music Man a #9. Not crazy about either one and not much country on here for
me. Only great track is Ghost Of Another Man. Eagles Desperado cover barely passes but I do love the original. A
couple of bombs with Rock And Roll Man and My World Begins And Ends With You. Not much out there on this album. A
couple of Kenny's own tracks which he never was that great at for me. He was still to hit his peak with seven #1
country albums to follow. Although the man achieved legendary status, his last album was released by Cracker Barrel
if that says anything.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - Rock And Roll Man

Best Track - Ghost Of Another Man

He’s living in that big old house that he knows was built by me
He’s playing with the baby that belongs to her and me.
At night he loves a woman that was held by these two hands
It must be living hell to live with a ghost of another man.

My name is in the side walk out by the bedroom door
He can’t help but see what’s still there in me everywhere he goes.
He'd gladly walk through heaven to forget what he can’t stand
It must be living hell to live with a ghost of another man.

I don’t mean to haunt him when they turn out the lights
I’m there in the bedroom with both of them each night.
And he wonders if he just loved her
As good as I loved her back then
It must be living hell to live
With a ghost of another man.

A gift from a mate. Never heard of this band. I do know of Midge Ure from his Ultravox days. I have a couple of
their albums. Don't care much for this. Too electronic I guess. Three instrumentals sunk it from the start. Of the
seven left, only liked four. The group was founded in '78 by Steve Strange, who I have also never heard of. Soon
hooked up with Midge. Fade To Grey and Tar came out on a '79 ep and also appear on this debut album. Tar was ok,
and was the fav, till I got to Mind Of A Toy. Still weak but that took the top spot. It says Tar was an anti-
smoking song, but it just made me want to light up, so it didn't work. Fade To Grey was a club hit and did nothing
for me. Only other ones I liked here were Malpaso Man and Visa-age. The group only lasted for three albums and I'm
not interested in the other two. This one made #13 in the UK and never surfaced here. Just realized, this group was
out in the early 80's, which explains why I never heard of them. That was my dead period as far as new music was
concerned.

I DO NOT LIKE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - The Steps

Best Track - Mind Of A Toy

My painted face
Is chipped and cracked
My mind seems
To fade too fast
Clutching straws
Sinking slow
Nothing less, nothing less

A puppet's motions
Controlled by a string
By a stranger
I've never met
A nod of the head
And a pull of the thread
I can't say no, can't say no

When a child throws out a toy
When I was new you wanted me
Now I'm old you no longer see

When a child throws out a toy
Spiteful girl
Hateful boy
When a child throws out a toy

I'm all dressed up
And nowhere to go
On a music box
That never stops
I'll dance for you
If you want me to
Move in time, move in time

A wooden head
And a broken heart
Used, abused
And torn apart
I gave you my best
And you gave me the rest
It's time to die, time to die

When a child throws out a toy
When I was new you wanted me
Now I'm old you no longer see

When a child throws out a toy
Spiteful girl
Hateful boy
When a child throws out a toy

When a child throws out a toy
When I was new you wanted me
Now I'm old you no longer see

When a child throws out a toy
Spiteful girl

THE PANICS "rain on the hummingwire" cd,2011.

did this one as a new release earlier in the year, had it several months now and posting it from the point of view of proper listens now.
this the third album by these guys from my neck of the woods in Perth,Western Australia.
i call these guys "indi pop", probably the best way to describe them. lots of pleasant melodies here on this one, nothing great, nothing bad, just a steady album of reasonable tracks, loosely sounding like fellow aussie band The Whitlams and Ben Folds IMO,
as i said nothing exceptional here, but a pleasant album nevertheless and worth getting as good "chillout" music.

I LIKE THIS ALBUM.

SHAGGY "hot shot" cd,2001.

pretty hard to know where shaggy fits in the whole genre thing as his music encompasses pop, dance, reggae and R&B...sometimes simultaneously???!
pretty sure i got this one purely on the strength of his worldwide #1 hit "it wasnt me"...had to be that as nothing else here would make me buy it!
he has a very Eddie Grant(remember him?) type quality to his voice...a very deep baritone reggae accent accompanied with some soulful type vocalsits to break up the harshness of his own voice...dont get me wrong, i love his vocals and vocal delivery on these tracks, just find most of the tracks have little else to offer and vocals alone dont make a song a good song!
had five hits off this album, two of which reached #1 in the UK,US and here in Australia(it wasnt me & angel) the rest all appear to have just been relatively minor hits except "luv me,luv me" which was also a UK top 5 hit.
2001 was the year of Shaggy with this,a #1 album all over the world, the #1 hits, numerous awards(but not Grammy's) the biggest selling single worldwide in "it wasnt me", but none of that means anything when i dont like this one.
still some pleasant tracks on here, just not enough for me to say it is a good album.
