The Beatles' classic 'Abbey Road' album has been crowned the top-selling vinyl LP in the US.
The 1969 record was the top seller for the third consecutive year in 2011 after clocking up sales of over 41,000 in America. They were up from 35,000 in 2010 and 34,800 in 2009, according to figures released by
Nielsen SoundScan.
Mumford and Sons' 'Sigh No More' and
Radiohead' 'The King Of Limbs' weren't far behind with the former clocking up 26,800 sales and the latter 20,800. Just behind them was
Adele with '21' which sold 16,500 copies. Earlier this week, her
album was also the biggest selling overall in the US.

Meanwhile, London's
Abbey Road Studios where
The Beatles' album was recorded
are set to welcome members of the public into the legendary Studio Two, which has also been used by
Pink Floyd and
Kate Bush.
Two talks will take place on March 10 as part of the studio's 80th anniversary celebrations. Led by Brian Kehew and Kevin Ryan, authors of
Recording The Beatles, the pair will deliver an audio visual presentation entitled
80 Years of Recording at Abbey Road Studios using archive photos, film and audio.
It will cover recordings made in the studio by Sir Edward Elgar, The Shadows, Peter Sellers, Helen Shapiro,
The Beatles,
Pink Floyd, The Hollies,
The Zombies and
Kate Bush as well as film scores recorded in Studio Two, such as those for the movies
Star Wars,
Harry Potter and
Lord of the Rings.

Interesting to see that vinyl is still not dead.................I wonder who actully is buying it and what for? Is it to have and play on a turntable ot a a memento of those days or to display or are there still people who prefer vinyl to CD/download ?

I find that vinyl records are genuine with their amazing artisic album covers that opened up like a book sometimes ! With a half decent stereo system the sound is excellent !
We did a thread on MD regarding favorite album covers !.
Unfortunately or fortunately whatever opinion you have the old waxworks have been replaced for the most part by the somewhat superficial CD and download format!
The real audiophiles are still buying vinyl and it's great to see!

i still buy the odd vinyl album...they all stay factory sealed now though...
predominantly i buy all Paul Weller albums and singles on vinyl...but also buy the cds and cd singles to play(only get the singles for the "non album tracks" as his b-sides are normally superior to his 'a-sides'...usually just not commercial enough for single release or dont fit on the albums for various reasons,sometimes they are covers of old obscure songs he grew up with.
the last couple of vinyl's i bought were....
Dark Side Of The Moon...the 2011 release with added extras on disc,booklet,stickers etc etc
Gorillaz "plastic beach" because the first 100 or so vinyl copies worldwide had a different colour scheme on the cover...thought it might be worth something someday, and was in the right place at the right time to get it!
finally, got the 1978 KISS solo albums factory sealed picture discs but they were also 2011 reissued releases, collectors 180gm vinyl discs.
so i only really get Weller, plus any others i see that may have value attached to them in the future.

Over Christmas I recieved a nice little ift that helped me put this into context.
For a long time I have been a user of a Linn vinyl engine with a high quality MC cartdrige ..............I but the cart which was over ten years old went the way of all things of this kind: it finally gave up the ghost a few months ago. So, for Christmas I was given a modest Ortofon MM cart by a well wishing member of the family. Well being busy I have only just got around to mounting this into the Linn and listening to a few albums.
Now bearing in mind that this is only a modest Cart I can see why vinyl sales of Abbey Road are significant ....................The ability of this little device when properly set up to resolve deatail and express the atmosphere of the recording is amazing......................For get the remasters for a moment, the sound and he feel of the recording is so well expressed that it made my CD copies pale into he distance..................................Forget an mp3 that was nowhere on the scale!!!!!!!!!!!:happy::happy:
