What Are You Listening To?
from my library (vinyl)

Don't you just love those ingenious album covers?
Did volume 2 a few weeks back. This one comes out much better, and a diamond album for James, meaning 10 million
copies sold, compared to Volumes 2's pathetic gold status. Covering the six albums released in the years 70-76. Most
of it before he went all pop on us. Or did pop go James? Always wonder about that. When an artist that has been
around awhile becomes popular, is it because they changed or did the masses finally come around? Thus my brain
meanders this morning. Anyway, JT, good stuff here. Sweet Baby James was always my favorite. Probably that line
about the Berkshires. I can relate, having lived there for a spell. Beautiful country, and James birthplace. Not
sure what his biggest hit was off of here. Maybe Carole King's You've Got A Friend, a love track by either artist.
Seven of the twelve tracks here come out with a love, and nothing I don't like. Another cover, How Sweet It Is get's
my least favorite. Thought Jr. Walkers was much better. But James found out he could get a hit with them covers. He
also belts out some nice blues on a live version of his early Steamroller. The album made #23 when released.

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

Worst Track - How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)

Best Track - Sweet Baby James

Well, there is a young cowboy he lives on the range
His horse and his cattle are his only companions
He works in the saddle and he sleeps in the canyons
Just waiting for Summer, his pastures to change

And as the moon rises he sits by his fire
Thinking about women and glasses of beer
And closing his eyes as the dogies retire
He sings out a song which is soft but it's clear
As if maybe someone could hear

Goodnight you moonlight ladies
Rockabye sweet baby James
Deep greens and blues are the colours I choose
Won't you let me go down in my dreams
And rockabye sweet baby James

Now the first of December was covered with snow
And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston
Though the Berkshires seemed dream-like on account of that frosting
With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go

There's a song that they sing when they take to the highway
A song that they sing when they take to the sea
A song that they sing of their home in the sky
Maybe you can believe it if it helps you to see
That singing works just fine for me

So, Goodnight you moonlight ladies
Rockabye sweet baby James
Deep greens and blues are the colours I choose
Won't you let me go down in my dreams
And rockabye sweet baby James

Just a comment about Uncle James, and I know you don't like live albums MH, but his 'Live' album is superb with some incredible backing vocals. There are two versions, a single disc and a double disc edition. The double is much better. SteveO this is one you should check out. Anyway, busy listening to 'Raising Sand' which I bought this morning. Too early to tell yet. Need to spin this a couple of times.

well you can't go wrong with a bit of new kids on the block... throw in the backstreet boys (who are currently in London recording an album) and you have a perfect mix... what more could a girl want...

ALBERT HAMMOND "it never rains in southern california" cd,1973.

debut set from Gibralter born,UK raised artist who had to move to LA to get a recording contract...
known moreso as a writer than a performer in his own right...much like Neil Sedaka and say Willie Nelson in that he's written songs for a hundred artists who have had major hits with his songs...
and still does to this day.
anyway,back to the album...
very similar in sound to a Neil Young(four strong winds/old man/comes a time type tracks) and Cat Stevens IMO...very folky/pop with peace and love as his main subjects
have two of his studio album and a best of set...all suberb IMO,not a bad track in sight.
my favourite AH track is on this one in "down by the river"..pretty much an environmental song about pollution, but done in a lighthearted, happy, warm style..

I LOVE THIS ALBUM

worst track: listen to the world
best track: down by the river

DOWN BY THE RIVER

city life was getting us down so we spent a weekend out of town
pitched our tent on a patch of ground down by the river
lit a fire and drank some wine
you put your jeans on top of mine,i said, come on in the waters fine

down by the river, down by the river, down by the river
said come in,the waters fine, down by the river

didnt feel too good all night[I] so we took a walk in the morning light
and came across the strangest sight down by the river
silver fish lay on its side
it was washed up by the early tide, wondered how it died

down by the river, down by the river, down by the river
silver fish lay on ts side, down by the river

doctor put us both to bed,he dosed us up and he shook his head
"only foolish people go" he said "down by the river"
"why do willow's weep" said he
"because theyre dying gradually from the waste from the factories"

down by the river, down by the river, down by the river
"why to willow's weep" he said, "down by the river"

in time the riverbanks will die
the reeds will wilt and the ducks wont fly
they'll be a tear in the otter's eye, down by the river
the banks will soon be black and dead and where the otter
raised its head, will be clean, white skulled instead

down by the river, down by the river, down by the river
the banks will soon be black and dead, down by the river
