What Are You Listening To?
from my library (vinyl)

Most known for her work with ex-hubby, Fairport Convention's Richard Thompson, this is Linda's first solo
outing, released shortly after their breakup. One standout track on here in Telling Me Lies, sounding like
something straight out of the Fleetwood Mac songbook. Voice reminds me of a mix of Christine McVie and
Carly Simon. A moderate like for the album, with two tracks on the down side. One of those in french which
I don't speak. She could be cussing me out for all I know. There would be a 17 year lapse after this album
before Linda would return to the studio. It wasn't that bad Linda. Friend Betsy Cook plays piano on this
and shares writing credt on most of the tracks. Never heard from her again. Don't see that the album ever
charted. The Telling Me Lies track was covered by Dolly, Linda, and Emmylou on their Trio album.

This guy is the love of my mother-in-law's life,,,,,I'd say she has terrible taste if Elvis weren't tied with him. Seeing him makes me laugh thinking of her trying to sing Smile

I even laughed when I pulled this one out of the box. Must have been in my mothers small collection that I got when
she passed some 25 years ago. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I would never have purchased this. Not that
it's terrible, just not my thing. There is the Willie Nelson duo on To All The Girls I've Known Before, which is my
favorite here. Also an ok duet with Diana Ross. Then there's the worst, with the Beach Boys backing up on the
classic Hollies song The Air That I Breathe. That one should never be touched. Just learned that was written by
Albert Hammond of It Never Rain's In Southern California fame. He contributes a couple of other track on here as
well. Then there's the terrible cover of Bread's If. The rest are new to me but nothing stands out. Five I like and
five and don't like. This was Julio's breakthrough album in the US, with that Willie Nelson duet making it so. It
made it to #5 on our singles chart and the album peaked at #6. Julio hasn't hit the top 40 since. Wonder if it could
have been Willie.

BETTE MIDLER "the best bette" cd,2008.

i generally call her "the queen of covers"...as she has spent the best part of her career doing just that...covering other artists songs!
and thats not a bad thing sometimes...i think Bette does very cool covers...everything from rock, thru pop, boogie(yep, that word again!),ballads, motown etc etc...
this is a nineteen track compilation set comprising every genre from the old standard "in the mood" thru to her sultry raunchy version of The Stones "beast of burdon"...
also, like her as an actress also, been in some fine movies in the past...
best here for me has to be her cover of Australian artist Kamahl's "wind beneath my wings" which just pips out "the rose" on here.
reasonably good artist, but cant listen to covers all the time by anyone, just pleasant when this one comes out in the 'to play' pile

Probably favorite album by the group. Of course that's not saying much with barely a like grade. They made
their mark with The Lonely Bull three years earlier, but this fourth album I believe was the best selling,
topping the chart when released. Wonder if the cover boosted sales. Love the two singles, which shows what
airplay can do. Those were A Taste Of Honey (#7) and Whipped Cream (#68). The latter is probably more well
known for being the theme song for the popular tv game show The Dating Game. Seeing as how several other
tracks from this album were also used in that show, makes me wonder if Mr. Alpert himself may have had
some connection to the show. Five tracks I did not like here with the worst being Love Potion No. 9, which
they turn into a raunchy strip tease number. Nice tidbit here, one of the session musicians on the album,
by the name of Russell Bridges, would later become known as Leon Russell.
