I am so bored of my current music selection. I have thousands of amazing songs but a surprisingly small amount of truly "GREAT" or "PERFECT" albums. Despite having wildly eclectic tastes, I get quite discriminatory about the songs I listen to, being that my main concern in musical selection is originality combined with strong, creative hooks in melody and/or rhythm. I love unusual chord progressions and rhythms. It's not enough for me to hear a "weird song" though because to me, weirdness without any kind of order is just chaos, and chaos does not require talent. Right now, my favorite albums are:
Arcade Fire - Funeral, Neon Bible, The Suburbs, The Beatles - ââ¬â¹A Hard Day's Night, Beatles For Sale, Help!, Rubber Soul, Magical Mystery Tour, White Album, Abbey Road, The Foo Fighters - The Colour and the Shape (this is actually the only foo album that I like), Paul McCartney - Ram, Radiohead - OK Computer, Kid A, Hail to the Thief, In Rainbows, Ray Charles - The Genius Sings the Blues, Silverchair - Young Modern, The Strokes - Is This It, Room on Fire, Comedown Machine, Velvet Underground - The Velvet Underground and Nico. ââ¬â¹
Besides all of that, my two other highly specific passions in music are: sad songs from the 40s, 50s, and early 60s (Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, Etta James, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Motown music) and laid back easy listening types of songs from the late 60s and early 70s (a little bit of Bread, a little bit of America, Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, Beatles and their early solo albums, acoustic Led Zeppelin songs, etc). Out of those two types listed, I've never been able to find one single album dedicated to those specific moods.
Anyway, so based upon my described tastes - is there any album missing from my collection that you might recommend? I'm sure there is and I'm just dying to find out. Hours upon hours of internet research just keeps leading me back to the same overrated albums that I've already heard before.

By your described music taste, it seems like you fit right in on this music forum hehe..don't mind me..I haven't been on here in a long time but since I do check out a lot of music, some of which you may like..especially since you strike me as a pretty average music listener (it's not really your fault) and probably don't know about much of anything more obscure and lessor known that's decent..I will try and help you out.

I can see that you are a big Beatle fan like myself ! Welcome aboard the great MD, MaxwellEdison ! An album that is great from start to finish is a rarity! I like all music and I am constantly searching for that lost chord ....a subconscious journey in discovering that "great album " !!! There is a thread here on MD buried somewhere in the past in the General Music Forum,,,your Beatle and Arcade Fire album choices are pretty close!
I have been listening to music for decades and the perfect album that I discovered recently is A[B]nathema's Weather Systems ![/B]!!! Oh there are others, most Beatle stuff, Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Murder Ballads by Nick Cave, London Calling - Clash! I am sure the other members will recommend much more music perfection for you! Steven Wilson and Opeth have great music out there also !
I also came across an album by Ihsahn called Das Seelenbrechen...very good avant garde ambient music !!!!

A clip of very good symphonic metal...reminds me of Nightwish,Within Temptation, Epica, Evanescence...and many more artist in that genre... Thank you all for the warm welcome! Interesting suggestions. I generally prefer more organic sounding stuff over electronic synths and the like. Radiohead is my one exception though, I love how they use electronic sounds. I also don't really like dark, ominous music (Radiohead being the exception again there too. They just always seem to get a free pass with me no matter what they do).
I'm always looking for a healthy balance of upbeat songs and really melancholic songs. I lost my interest in most of the aggressive and darker styles of music as soon as I graduated high school. I have no idea why because I was raised on 90s grunge and hard rock but that's how the chips fell. Anyway, I shall scour the forums for interesting leads!

Hey thanks evilB, I will definitely look into those when I find some time. And in response to SteveO, defining "organic".....well, in using that term I meant to say that I prefer to steer clear of the really digital sounding albums that have started cropping up from the 80's to the present. I'm not necessarily stuck in the 60's and 70's, but when I listen to truly modern music, I generally prefer the songs that have more of a tube-driven/analogue vibe and of course, old-fashioned real-life instruments help too, as opposed to electronic beats and synths. The best examples I can come up with right now are Arcade Fire's Funeral and Neon Bible albums, several times throughout them, there are nice layered arrangements of all different kinds of instruments, woodwinds, brass, violins, guitars, REAL drums, etc. Aside from the instruments, the recordings themselves sound very live and natural to me, as opposed to a lot of other rock albums that sound like they were recorded in a tin can. Anyway, it's all neither here nor there if a band/artist can't write an interesting melody. See, I started listening to music with The Beatles when I was 5 years old and I've had this life-long expectation that everyone else should be as melodic and catchy as them. That philosophy just causes me to be more dismissive, I'm working on it though

Your parents must have been Beatle fans ,,,five years old ...very young exposure to the mop tops! I started listening to them in my early teens..I still listen to them frequently !

My parents didn't ever seem to care much about The Beatles, but for some reason, my dad actually had a few vinyl albums and singles hidden away in storage. My older siblings discovered them one day and started listening to them, needless to say, all 3 of us were hooked right then and there! And then "The Beatles Anthology" was aired on TV right about the same time. That little extra bit of propaganda made sure that our allowances went towards Beatles Cds lol.
