Is rap considered music?

I don't care for much rap, but there's some enjoyable stuff out there. At the end of the day though, who cares? People like it and it's generally accepted as music. No need to reinvent the wheel or anything.

We are not discussing quality, merely categories. There is a difference between prose and poetry even if the lines are blurred sometimes; there is a difference between 3D printing and sculpture even if the lines are blurred sometimes; there is a difference between architecture and architectronics even if the lines are blurred sometimes... "Reinventing the wheel"? It's more like reinventing chess or mahjongg. Can you come back with clips that prove my position mistaken?

Rap is not in my Ipod. When I was in elementary school and high school, rap was popular. Back when I was a teenager, I listened to rap out of peer pressure, my observation is that it is just a person yapping, with a lousy voice projection, on a background track. The background track is considered music, but the person yapping is not. I don't know how Eminem became so popular, he is just yapping about his mom, trapped in a closet or something, with swear words added.

A typical rap lyric: Antlers in the treetop/Who goosed the moose? Can you quote rap lyrics that enhance the human experience? Most all I've heard encourage some kind of violence--just what we don't need more of in this world...unless you wish to post the ISIS/ISIL greatest hits collection.

You call those tracks great music? I can easily evaluate what's a good quality song and discard a song that is poor quality and trash...I discarded them (the tracks) all.

I have always thought rap was invented for people who can't sing
bet you 90% of rappers can not carry a tune

I cannot because I have no idea what your point is. All you did was list 2 different subcategories of one larger category and say they're different. Sure prose and poetry are different; no one's going to say they're the same thing. But at the end of the day, they're both art. 3D printing and sculptures are different, but both art. Chess and Mahjongg are different, but they're both games.

The question posed originally is; is rap music? Following your example of comparing two different items that are linked under one larger umbrella; Rap and death metal are different. But they're both music.

What's the point that I'm supposed to be disputing with clips?

Honestly people, don't take him/her too seriously. On MB this thread has reached 20 pages, and they have shown himself/herself to be a troll. He/she didn't address any of our points, and insisted that it isn't music. And he/she just recently said this, which should tell everything.

"I would rather listen to music that hypes you up and gives you drive and passion, rather than listening to rap, where you feel like Western Civilization has degenerated in the 21st century."

Any music goes ! If I like it, I like it! It's only music not warfare. Let's chill out and have some fun! I never slammed anyone's taste in music! To each his own. Music like all the other arts is subjective and personal! I have listened to a tremendous amount of music from all genres over the centuries and I have come to the conclusion that you have to educate yourself by allowing yourself to be exposed to different types of music! There is a tremendous trove of music sounds out there! I can listen to Louis Armstrong and then Miranda Lambert and then the progressive metal band Opeth all in the same session! I started out listening to The Beatles, Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, then one day on a whim I purchased an album by the great legendary alto saxophone jazz Bird - Charlie Parker - Now's The Time...I guess in hindsight it was certainly "now's the time" to listen to other kinds of music!

There are those who believe rap is music and I know people who have taught music through rap. It is not my cup of tea, although there are some examples that I like (the purists probably hate them), such as Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel, The Prodigy, Gary Byrd, The Roots, Afrika Bambataa and De La Soul. There was a rap-rock band called The Workhorse Movement, who were great, but black Sabbath's dabblings in rap have been disasterous.

I am not averse to a bit of musical taste warfare; as an ELP fan, I get it all the time. What I don't like, and encounter a lot, is those who defend or criticise by re-writing history.

I am inclined to agree with MH and others in this thread, and see rap as a lazy way of avoiding singing and melody. Rap is not alone in this respect, but gets a lot of attention. I remember The Sugar Gill Gang and early rap and thinking it was a fad which would pass. All these years later and I am wishing it would go away.
