I'm going right to the bone--the T-Bone, that is. There is nothing I can say about # 2 and #3 (SRV and BB King) that hasn't been said 110X better by better than me. So:
T-Bone Walker Why is he #1? First off, somebody has to be but seriously: nobody has played so many styles so well and invented so much stuff nor written better than Mr. Walker. An early-adopter and innovator in both the jump Blues and West Coast Blues musics, as aligned as they are--he was a direct link and played many years in a jazz band too. A great leader but also a spiffing sideman. Always attracted the best players. Bucking-up Contributor/frank's only listing has been a real experience--I've learned so much in researching and presenting these for-all-time artists. Been my extreme pleasure in show-casing all this, but it's done. Now if somebody wants to Post a list of #101-200, it'll be hares-and-hounds again...

No, the original show ended when presenter Bob Harris left at the end of the seventies. From the start of the eighties, they shortened the name to Whistle Test, brought in a series of bland presenters and had typical eighties bands. I stopped watching by the early eighties as I didn't like punk rock and synth pop, but they continued to the late eighties. In the meantime, a new channel, Channel 4, had started a peak-time show, The Tube, consisting of live bands, although they were commercial like U2. Jools Holland of The Tube went on to present his own OGWT type show called Later With . . ., but you have to suffer a lot of rubbish to see one or two good bands if you are lucky.
Our TV and radio channels in the UK have never been committed to rock radio or live rock music on TV, unlike, say, the US. Rock music meant underground music, whereas in the US it was filling the charts.
Live footage, from the OGWT, of bands like Alice Cooper, Judus Priest, Budgie, Baker Gurvitz and many others, has become the holy grail to people like me, who were a bit too young to stay up late and watch the programme when it first started. I caught up with it for a few years, especially the new year shows. I remember going to parties, but finding a TV with my friends to watch OGWT's (fantastic) round up of the year. It was the first time I heard early Rush or The Outlaws and others.
As a footnote, in the early nineties, we had a late night show with the appalling titles of, first, Raw Power and, later, Noisy Muthas. This was around the time of bands like Sepultura with shorts and goatee beards, but they did have Extreme, Stiltskin, Hootie, Manny Charlton Band, Neal Schon, 21 Guns and others. After the programme finished for the evening, it was followed by old concert footage of bands like TYA and Hawkwind. The last time I looked, there wasn't much footage on the internet.
BBC4, a digital freeview channel, make some excellent documentaries and compilations, shown on Friday nights, but we now get practically no live rock music on TV.
So the short answer is 'no', OGWT is not still running and it finished around 25 years ago.

im actually a big fan of Jools Holland's "later with....".
i love the format of the show also and watch it as often as it is on.
not sure if that is because two of my favourite artists have been on there a lot over the years in Nick Cave and Paul Weller.

One of the problems with Holland's show is that he is trying to be all things to all people. I've seen David Gilmour and Johnny Cash on the show. When Johnny Cash died, they put together a compilation of his performances on Later With . . . and they were really good. I just don't like the modern music (Plan B, John Newman) or performers who are past their best, like Ronnie Spector.

Magnificent follow-on convo in your usual style, Big Ears. If there's a problem with it, it's that it's sort of hidden away in this Thread and many who might benefit might not think to look here--nice problem to have. I hear your objections to Jools show but occasionally, he'd get an artist to step outside their expected or comfort zone (actually the same is true of Live from Daryl's House). Searching YT for your fave artist can lead to delightful surprises on both.
