How do you define music innovation

Innovation to me means a new approach to composing. The 'sounds' themselves could be standard instruments but the way they are blended together might be quite unique. Or the method used to play them. Much like a chef creates a new meal but the ingredients are standard items. Then there is also innovation with regard to actual instruments - the Eigerharp for example. I don't think the term 'alternative' really has much credibility anymore. Everything is an alternative to something else anyway.
