what's "popular" today is pretty lame to me as well. I think the quality in mainstream music started to die around the mid to late 90s, during the boy band era, and then internet pirating didn't help either. I too wonder when will this change, it's like we've been on this same train for at least 15 years. Right now, it's mostly trap music and edm. I also hate how R&B and Hiphop got fused together. I cannot wait for this trap music era to end, all those damn hi hats and bass is just too much. With this being said, there are and have been some good mature artists to make noise since the 90s. But yeah it's nothing like the old days.
I was just listening to the Casey Kasem's Top 40 archives on youtube, it's really refreshing to hear how radio use to sound. It used to make us feel some type of way. I feel like I was privileged to be born in '81, because the 80s and some of the 90's was full of good music from all genres.
