The end of "good" music
#11
I cannot stand the term producers when used in the current music industry setup. Strictly speaking, if somebody produces something, they automatically become producers. So if I happen to produce a fart it means I am a producer! But we all know what being a producer really means. They had a difficult job managing their clients (think Pete Townshend/Keith Moon) but never 'produced' a single note of music. That wasn't their job. Their job was to look at the overall big picture of the album being created, find the right session musicians, book studios, manage marketing and above all else TELL the artist that what they had just produced in the studio was crap - they were a one-man quality control system. That's one of the mistakes of the current model. People are creating crap but there is no-one there to tell them that the material sucks - the result is an oversupply of second-rate rubbish.

Yes there are artists producing quality material but they are few and far between. The mainstream artists of the 60's/70's used to be talented musicians in their own right. The mainstream artists now are mostly manufactured entities. Most cannot play a single bloody note on an instrument. It's all social media hype and internet marketing. Take a band like Toto for example, pretty mainstream back in the day, but they were all talented session musicians who spent years honing their craft. I cannot think of one mainstream musician today who spent any time learning their craft in studios supporting other acts. Technology has a lot to do with this because you can duplicate studio environments 'in-the-box' these days but you cannot duplicate the experience that goes with it and it shows.

Uncle Salty made a statement - 'That's why 'our' music is best. Not because of the production, the tonalities, the style, the lyrics, etc.' - I disagree with that particular line because for me it IS about these things. I do however agree with everything else he has to say but that particular line stood out for me.

Now for my next pet peeve - that word 'featuring'............
