I often feel like I'm missing something about song lyrics. I thought I'd ask how other people see lyrics and hopefully I'll gain something from it, starting with this song that I just listened to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4vUQz-1i5o
Some questions:
He starts by saying "we're alright" and just a couple of lines later he says "When you're alone carry on." Why this sudden change from "we" to "you?" Does this mean the singer knows he will soon be gone, leaving the person he's addressing alone?
What would nails in one's bones symbolize?
"Promise you will be there..." Be where?
The only time other people than the two in the first and second person perspective are mentioned, is with "This pain put there by your loved ones." It seems like such a significant line that I feel like the rest of the lyrics are about these loved ones somehow, and we're supposed to read exactly how between lines. Do you agree, and why/why not?
Reading these lyrics, how clearly do you feel you understand their theme?
Do you think lyrics should have a well defined theme, or are you happy with them conveying vague moods and feelings?
