My first post! 
1) Soul/R&B & Hip Hop/Rap
Hip-Hop is probably the most controversial genre of music nowadays. That's because most people either don't understand it or are only exposed to the garbage rappers such as Lil' Wayne or T-Pain. I think it's a shame, especially when I read things like what Jerome previously wrote about hip-hop. It's too often regarded as thug music that disrespects women, promotes violence and gangs. REAL hip-hop is about peace, love, unity and having fun, sending message and entertaining others. I believe if most people really took the time to explore what hip-hop really is they would be pleasantly suprised. Real HH is not what you hear on the radio

By the way, a turntable IS an instrument that require skill and creativity. Do a crab scratch... (to use the same expression as you did)
Then comes Soul, R&B (real R&B that is), two genres which I discovered thanks to hip-hop. When listening to the likes of Patrice Rushen, Roy Ayers (what a genius) or others, it just gives me a rush of emotions that can hardly be described.
2) Electronic Music
Again, controversial. What I like about electronic music is the experimentation it allows. The possibilities offered are literally infinite. Plus it's really fascinating to hear sounds that you would have never even imagined otherwise. It's like exploring outer space or other dimensions. I'll go as far as saying that for me that (good) electronic music is the classical music of the modern days.
What I also enjoy in electronic music is its appeal to the body.
Of course, I don't like all electronic music. Some of it can be waaay to aggressive (breakcore, hardtek, happy hardcore...), sound too synthetic... it's one of those genre you really have to explore.
3) Jazz & Blues
Jazz is one of the genre I would like to explore more in the future. Again, it's all about the emotions it gives me.
5) Rock:- Rock & Roll, Classic Rock, & Progressive Rock
4) Alternative:- Punk, Post-Punk, Grunge & Indie
6) Hard Rock & Metal
I used to be quite a metal head when I was younger. But I only enjoyed the old school thrash metal of the 80's, or the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal. Seriously, metal today is too loud, over-saturated and screamy for me. Growing up I started enjoying more soulful, smooth music so it's not really for me I guess. I still enjoy a few hard rock bands though (AC/DC, Motorhead...) or some Heavy Metal mostly from the 70's (Black Sabbath).
7) Country, Folk & World Music
I didn't really know what to make of this category.... the three genres really don't have anything to do with each other if you ask me.
9) Classical Music & Opera
I have a lot of respect for classical composers and musicians, opera singers etc. If classical music is played somewhere, I think I'll enjoy it, but I won't be looking for it or playing it. I also feel a bit guilty for putting this at such a low position, but it just doesn't appeal to me as much. And opera is just not my cup of tea at all. I guess it's because it sounds too classy and refined, if you see what I mean. I just feel out of place when listening to it.... i'm a hip-hop head after all ::biggrin:
10) Film & Stage Music
I don't really see - correct me if I'm wrong (i probably am) - how film & stage music is a separate musical genre... depending on the mood it wants to create, it could belong to many different genres?

If this category refers to the unbearable garbage promoted by the music industry and mainstream media: I despise it. There's a lot I could say about why I find it so bad and why it is such a shame that some people only listen to this but I can't really be bothered right now :tongue:
