Actually I didn't make that comment about hip hop - I made it about rap - very important point. The lyrics of a lot of rap songs are demeaning to women and treat them as second class citzens. By the way if you have the time listen to Linton Kwesi Johnson (or is it Johnstone??!!) - This is where rap should have gone. Just an opinion. And I suppose the thing I don't like about it is simply this - if you turn off the vocal track what are you left with in terms of music? Very, very little. The other thing I think is relevant (again - just an opinion), is that music has to breathe - i.e. it has to have highs and lows, fast and slow, bright and dim, sharp and soft - all within the same piece. For me personally, rap is just a relentless barrage of talking over a very simplistic rhythmn or 'manufactured' beat. Ever notice how all the 'drum' samples they are using all sound the same. I know you don't agree with my views but I think they are relevant. Each to their own!
Or maybe I'm just an old fart - set in his ways......You can't teach an old dog new tricks and all that.
What I am waiting for is someone who is going to come up with a really new approach to music - not just a re-hash of existing styles. A really new perspective on music. The last time that happened was when Jean Michel Jarre released 'Oxygene' - it completely blew me away. It still does......
