If you like modern Southern soul or Gospel, then you know the "Sovereign of Southern Soul". Nobody has the back-catalog, the current roster, the reach and heft of this company. They have been accused of some sharp biz practices (artists' contracts, licensing agreements, etc.) but Motown was certainly guilty of this too. Tough business, where only the sometimes ruthless survive (see: Morris Levy at Roulette et cet.).
